Find THIN Protein shakes and try those out. Don't get too much of anything, you don't know what you will like after surgery. I think that has less to do with changing taste buds and more to do with mood swings. Just do yourself and favor and find Protein Shakes you LIKE now, don't wait until you need them.

Wireless bra that hooks in the front.

Hey Julz... Fellow MD'er here :) what part are you from? I'm from Northern Cecil County and had my surgery at Franklin Square near White Marsh.

sugar free Popsicles

Lite yogurts without fruit

sugar free pudding

Herbal tea

Powerade zero

Sonic ice

Only get a couple of each and 1 box of the Popsicles. You'll find that you won't eat much.

My doctor didn't have me start shakes until after the first week, they just wanted me to focus on getting fluids in. So follow your doctors orders on that. When I started drinking shakes it would take me an hour to get 8-11 oz in.

Non food,

A couple pairs of comfortable pjs

Sweat pants

I swear by a body pillow.. this made laying on my side to sleep much easier having it to support my stomach. Even now it's my favorite thing lol.

A good refillable Water bottle. I got a Yeti tumbler. Because it took me so long to drink it kept my drink cold for hours.

Heating pad

Good luck :)

I made sure to have one thing of broth, one of each flavor sugar free jello/pudding I like, a few juices I liked (first three days post op were regular clear juice for me), some Protein (not only shakes but flavorless gene pro Protein that can be added to anything), Chapstick, heating pad, and plenty of ice packs. I also made sure my house was stocked with whatever my husband would need so he wouldn't have to go to the store I didn't know how I would be feeling.

also, I'm a fellow Maryland resident! I had my surgery at northwest hospital!

Don't buy too much. Your tastes may change and your idea of the quantity you need will be drastically different than your actual need.

I was driving within 24 hours so getting what I wanted/needed the day after surgery was no big deal. I threw away so much stuff that I couldn't stomach -- total waste.

Buy a few good books, and make a list of tv shows/ movies to watch! The first week can get very boring (especially because you'll most likely have 0 energy) if you don't have things to occupy yourself with. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
