For those who did NOT have a Preop diet....

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery on Tuesday. Besides being super nervous, I can't find my day before instructions. The nurse is not very nice (and I've already called her twice). If you are someone who didn't have a pre-op diet before surgery...what were you allowed to eat. I think she told me regular Breakfast, then Clear liquids until 12am...then nothing by mouth.

Exactly that, a light breakfast, drink 10oz magnesium citrate liquid solution (Walmart laxative isle 94 cents) at 5pm and nothing to eat or drink past 12am.

I wouldn't take a laxative unless specifically instructed by your surgeon (for anyone else who's reading).

The day before my surgery, I was on full liquids, no milkshakes or jamba juice, then nothing by mouth after midnight, I think.

I didn't have a pre-op diet in the sense that 6 months before surgery I was on a diet, but I was told that a week before surgery I was allowed clear liquids only. This sucked. chicken broth got me through it because at least that tasted salty. I also cheated 4 days before surgery and had some organic cheese puffs and something else small because I was starving and I got a head cold. My friend's dad was not given a pre-op diet and they went out to a giant meal the night before surgery, which is such a bad idea.

In theory, you really only probably should do clear liquids for a few days before surgery because it shrinks your liver enough that when they go under it to access your stomach, they don't crack it, which if that happens you are stuck in surgery for hours fixing a disaster. The general rule for surgeries is nothing by mouth from midnight onward on the day of surgery. They want to make sure your stomach is totally empty in case your gag reflex isn't totally gone by the time they intubate you. If you puke what's in your stomach and then inhale it into your lungs because you're laying down and basically otherwise paralyzed, then you get pneumonia and they get sued. That's the rationale behind why we don't eat before surgery when we have the option to plan ahead.

Only liquids 24 hours before, clear. Meaning Water and broth. Then nothing, ZILCH after midnight. My surgery as at 8:30am.

I had no pre op diet and was instructed to eat normally the day before my surgery. Obviously, nothing to eat or drink past midnight. Although I had no pre op diet I did have to continuously try and lose weight every day before surgery. Every doctor is different and you need to listen to them. I would continuously call them for proper instructions.

Thank you for the responses. I really admire those of you willing to start early with no orders from the Dr., that is NOT me. The reason I'm having this surgery is because I'm a food addict, and I need surgical intervention. I have the rest of my life to figure out how to eat less with a sleeve....not going to deprive myself before I have to.

It makes me laugh when I see people on the forum who say...if you don't do "such and such" you're not ready for this surgery. Really? Anyone who needs this surgery has proven they are not a expert on losing and maintaining weight on there own. So, I ate a lot today...and yes I am ready for the surgery because of that very fact.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
