Three weeks out and can eat four ounces easily..normal?

I feel like I can eat way too much. I am on soft foods, and yesterday I had some tuna. I weighed it, and ate four ounces and I didn't feel even slightly full! I didn't eat more because I didn't want to overdo it, but I thought I would struggle with four ounces, but not even slightly!! Some people can only eat an ounce or two, so why can I eat so much? I am doomed to fail already :(

I'm in the same boat. 3 weeks out. I think some foods go down more quickly. I've heard them referred to as slider foods. When I eat Soups or turkey chili I can eat more than when I eat canned chicken with cheese. You are doing great by measuring and being cognizant of how much you're eating.

I think it would be good for both of us to reach out to our nutritionist to get their insight. I'll share what mine says.

The key for me is not to go for feeling "full", but to feel satisfied.

Try practicing eating mindfully: eat slowly, take small bites, chew thoroughly, and put your utensil down between bites. This is really helpful for me.

For the record, tuna is NOT a slider food. No animal Protein is a slider food.

Slider foods are highly processed high-carb foods that don't require much digestion at all. Want to test something to see if it's a "slider food"? Put it in a glass of Water and see how long it takes to turn to mush.

Some typical slider foods: crackers, white bread, potato chips, ice cream, Cookies, cooked potatoes.

Was it just straight tuna or was it tuna with mayo? Did you eat it in 20 minutes or less?

Just because you can eat more doesn't mean you should. You shouldn't even know you can have 4 ounces of tuna at 3 weeks because you shouldn't be trying it.

Tuna is pretty hard to process.

When I started on food I ate the recommended serving amounts, 2 ounces at a time, like my plan stated.

There is no point in stressing your staple line. Also all those nerves in that area aren't even reconnected. Be careful.

Well, first of all I was still on liquids at three weeks so tuna wasn't even on the menu at that point. But no, even at two years out I don't think I could eat 4 ounces of tuna. Well, I probably could but I would be uncomfortable.

Perhaps you don't feel full because you can't feel anything. Your nerves were cut during surgery so normal sensation probably hasn't returned. Be very careful and maybe decrease how much you are trying to eat at a time. Besides, eating to fullness should NEVER be a goal postop. It is a very bad habit that will lead to regain down the line.

The plan from my surgeon states that I am supposed to weigh my meals and eat no more than 4 ounces, which is what I did. I did not eat more than that, I just felt like I could have without restriction.

I didn't mix it with mayo. It was just tuna that I mashed up with a fork.

I am a month out and my nutritionist says that 4 ounces is typical at this point. Talk to your nutritionist, everyone experiences their sleeve differently.

I'm not allowed those types of "solid" foods yet, not even until week 5 or maybe 6. (? need to double check but I'm not about to ruin my wound!) Like I've mentioned before, mine is very cautious.

Thanks! I plan on following the plan and I am absolutely not going to go order a large pizza or anything just to see how much I can eat lol..ill just keep measuring and make it work :)

My surgeon progressed me thru food stages quickly and I was concerned when I could eat 2 eggs or 4 Oz of cottage cheese at around that same time. tuna and chicken were the same. Surgeon had no issues with it at all. I am now 3 months out and my limit is still that 4 Oz and I am perfectly fine with that. And it depends on food. eggs for some reason fill me up where those 2 eggs are probably pretty close to pushing my limit. I don't like to eat til I feel restriction but sometimes it creeps up on me even if I'm eating the same amount I've eaten before. The further you get from surgery the more you'll figure it all out. I'm 5 months out and can still only eat about 2 ounces in one sitting. if I waited 30 minutes to an hour, I could eat more but that's all I can handle in one sitting. I can't even imagine being able to hold 4 ounces at once.

I'll be three years out in May and 4oz of tuna would be a stretch for me. I, too, was on full liquids/purees at your stage but as long as you are following plan, you should be fine.

I am curious how long it takes you to eat 4oz. My doctor advised me to weigh out my food, but to never eat for, more than 30 minutes. I can easily eat a pizza if I eat a bite here and bite there all day, but I can't eat more than a small slice in a sitting. :)

As far as the "doomed" talk? Meh. You are only "doomed" if you choose to be. :D

I'm currently on purees and I can tell a difference depending on what type of food it is. I was able to eat a 5oz container of yogurt this morning, but more than 2-3 ounces of refried Beans is a much different story. Follow your doctor's advice and you'll be fine! I think it's normal to feel nervous about everything this early in the game (I'm the same way), but you will be fine!

If there's one thing I'm learning is that nothing is "normal" post-sleeve.

For the first few weeks I couldn't feel my restriction at all (even though I never tested them) but still stuck with the weighing/measuring my food and all that jazz.

Now I'm officially 8 weeks out and can eat a 5oz dannon light & fit Greek yogurt in 20min BUT can't handle more than 2-2.5oz of food (depending on the day). So that's like 1.5oz of Protein, .5oz of black Beans, and .5oz of cheese. And eating that takes me about 30-40 minutes.

I feel a restriction now. The "harder" the food the more I feel it. Definitely check with your doctor to make sure you're okay, but if you're following your eating plan/nutritionist's orders, trust the process and you will be just fine.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
