Vomiting in the middle of the night! PLEASE HELP

Recommended Posts

Okay, so here's my story. I'm 11 months post op VSG. I was sleeved in Mexico as a self pay. I do not have a bariatric doctor to talk to (that's where I need your help)!

Starting about 3 months after my surgery I would wake up in the middle of the night with my mouth filling up with liquid from the back of my mouth near ear/jaw bone. I then find myself running to the bathroom and vomiting acidic liquid but mostly dry heaving because nothing will come up. This repeats through the night.

This has been going on 1/2 x's per month it stopped for about 2 months and has started again. I talked to my PCP and she said I should try sleeping upward at an angle and take an acid reducer before bed. I've done both and am still finding myself waking up in this annoying way!

Can you help, relate?? I'm not sure if I'm flying solo here, if not please let me know what advice you were given!

Thanks in advance!

I would go to a gastroenterologist. They specialize in stomach issues. It doesn't sound right that this keeps happening.

For how many hours prior to going to bed do you NOT eat anything? Gastroenterologists advise a minimum of two hours of eating nothing before lying down at night to sleep.

Have you stopped eating the major foods / drinks that exacerbate reflux? Just a few of those are wine, chocolate, Tomato sauce, coffee .... The list goes on. ;)

You may (?) also have a hiatal hernia that needs to be repaired. A gastroenterologist can advise you about that.

Also, be careful about the kind of acid reducer you take. Meds like Tums and Maalox are not nearly as effective as PPI's like omeprazole (Prevacid) and Protonix.

This definitely sounds like reflux. Get thee to a gastroenterologist, pronto.

Totally agree. And at the frequency it is happening you should get in ASAP. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
