My husband booked a cruise for our family last July 2015. It is a week long cruise with our 8 and 5 year old. We've fully paid for it. Sail date is right before Memorial Day at the end of May.

I should have my pre-op things completed at the very end of March. If insurance approves, that means a late April surgery or beginning of May. I don't think that would be wise to have the surgery a few weeks before leaving. The vacation is bad timing.

I have been doing much better on my pre-op diet. I just got back from walking 3.75 miles with our 8, 5, and 2 year old. :) I have my second visit with my NUT next week. If I get approved, can I control to wait until Mid June? I don't want to push surgery back but I also don't want to be 3-4 weeks out from major surgery running after my kids walking up and down stairs etc.

Advice?

You have no idea how you'll feel postop and you will likely be on liquids or pureed foods at that point, which would be a PIA to deal with on the cruise. I say postpone the surgery and have a blast pigging out on your cruise!

I agree go on the cruise! Enjoy some time with your family before you have your surgery. There is no way of telling how you will feel after surgery.

My surgery is mid March and I'm in Hawaii right now. I will do a 2 week preop diet starting as soon as I get home and be ready for surgery!

I say do it and have the surgery shortly after you get home.

I went on a cruise at 6 weeks post op. Looking back I would have been ok to go earlier, I just would have had to rely on my Protein drinks more, but still could have been done. At 6 weeks post op while on the cruise, I had eggs for Breakfast, some form of protein for lunch and dinner. I would mix a Protein Drink for a snack once in a while to be sure I was getting enough protein. For me everything was fine.

I would wait for your surgery. I was still struggling with dehydration at 4-6 weeks out, and add in the warm/tropical climate...no thanks! I also really struggled with my energy level for at least the first month- maybe longer.

Enjoy that vacation and have your surgery. How you will feel post-op no one knows. Make sure you don't end up doing pre-op while on vacation so plan the surgery far enough away that you can really enjoy the vacation.

Thanks everyone!!! So glad I found this support.

Second NUT visit went well. I lost 4 pounds in 4 weeks. I'm not exercising. It's all due to diet change. I can't see or feel a difference yet. Looking forward to my next NUT meeting in March. Hoping for another 4 pound loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
