My friend just came out of surgery yesterday and my date is set for 3/4/16 FINALLY. Can anyone tell me is there away to prevent the pain in your shoulders from gas? She said that they keep telling her to walk but it's very painful. If there is something I can do pre op I much rather try it! TIA

There's nothing you can do to prevent it. It's a byproduct from the surgery. It's not so bad for everyone.

Do you know what it comes from?

It comes from the gas they pump into your abdomen to expand the work space around your stomach. It just allows them more room for their tools and to maneuver. Some of that gas gets trapped inside you when they seal you back up and takes a while to work its way out. Walking definitely helps. And pain meds....

Movement is key, for the gas and for your bodies recovery. Get up every couple hours and walk, it also helped to do shoulder rolls while walking. The gas pain is manageable and is different in everyone. Mine stayed around for a little over a week but everyday it gets better. I got out of bed as soon as I woke up from surgery, and walked the halls for 30 minutes with a nurse every couple hours.
