15 years post-op - severe abdominal pain

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric bypass approximately 15 years ago. Something has been happening the past several months and I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this issue. Of course I am going to get with a doctor, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has gone through this. It's happened to me three times, and its getting worse each time. For approximately 3 hours last night I had severe stomach pain. It was extremely intense, to the point where I couldn't even stand up. It was a constant throbbing pain, I honestly felt like my stomach was about to tear open. I was also sweating profusely and burping a lot. I would have gone to the ER, but there was no way I could have driven. I felt like I was almost on the verge of passing out. The pain eventually subsided and I basically passed out for a few hours. I woke up very sore and of course exhausted. The past few times, I had thought it was due to overeating, but last night it was the opposite. I had come home from the gym, and was about to eat dinner when it started. Honestly, it actually scared me. Has anyone else been through this or has heard of anything similar?

Yikes!

That does sound scary!

OK so I'm only 5 months out but recently I have had some stomach pains and I originally thought it was a leak or a stricture or my gallbladder.

No leak

No stricture

Gallbladder all good.

BUT my doctor prescribed me Pantoprazole (or Tecta) - it's for acid reflux. Ironically, I was on this medication for years pre surgery and I actually chose the RNY because it's supposed to cure acid reflux (or GERD) instantly.

Anyways as soon as I took my first pill that night the pains went away and haven't returned.

Weird, right?

I'll describe my stomach pains:

Feeling very bloated & it was a twisting like sharp pain right around my umbilicus.

Maybe you've developed Reflux?

Maybe you have gallstones?

Yes. I'm 13 yrs out of original; and 8 yrs out of revision. I had bad pains and vomitting almost 2 yrs. and finally in 10/15, had surgery again. Everything had come up above my diaphragm. Dr. had to dissect esophagus, put pouch and everything else back under the diaphragm and tack it in place. Esentially, repair hiatl hernia. About 6 weeks post op, had JUST what you explained. Would have gone to hosp. but literally could not move. Do believe it was r/t over eating. Mine resolved after about an hour. Relayed to surgeon later and he thought it probably was d/t over eating. Maybe you have a worsening hiatal hernia?? Please keep us informed under same topic title. I wish you well. I know the fear and pain!!! Still, for anybody reading; YES it was worth having the surgery done!! Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and information. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow to get the ball rolling on what is causing this issue. The past two days have been fine, and have had no stomach problems. This could actually be unrelated to my bypass, but when ever I have any kind of stomach issues, that's typically my first go to when looking for the cause.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
