6 Months Out And Not So Happy

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone ,

My father is 59 years old and he had his gastric bypass surgery 6 months back , earlier he was 125 kgs now he is 93 kgs. His weight reduction process is slow than expected. He is religiously following the diet chart and suppliments prescribed to him though he is too lazy to exercise.
But our major concern is , he is feeling sick and tired all the time . Last to last month he was daignosed with typhoid fever and now again this month he is daignosed with typhoid , jaundice and some intestinal infection all together. And somewhere because of all these issues he is feeling depressed and regreting the surgery.
So I am just wondering ,where is he lacking? What he can do to enhance his immune system ? Any Expert advice?

Thanks in Advance.

I am not an expert, but my first question would be "is he getting the recommended amount of Protein and fluids on a daily basis"?

@@shifa, I have no "Expert" advice, as I am not a physician. I hope that your father is under the care of his medical doctor and being treated for the problems he's having. Perhaps he should also inquire with the dietitian at his bypass surgery practice and his medical doctor about whether nutrition and food choices are relevant to the illnesses. It's probably especially important that he get enough Water in.

His disappointment in his weight loss is unfounded. At an average of nearly 12 lbs. per month, he is doing very well. It's true that some people lose faster, but the main thing is that he is losing weight.

I am so sorry to hear that he is discouraged as well as experiencing health problems.

I agree with the others. It sounds like he is doing great weight loss wise. Has he talked to his surgeon and/or NUT lately about his progress?

A physician can offer better advice about whether or not how he is feeling is related to the surgery or something else. He will probably need to check his blood for Vitamin levels, etc.

In the meantime, as long as he is following his program, getting in all of his Protein and fluids every day, avoiding starches and added sugars, taking his Vitamins and supplements as recommended, and exercising he should be able to continue to lose weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
