Is anyone not taking reflux meds post-VSG?

Recommended Posts

We must take it

Who is we?

I don't take them. I'm fine at almost three years out. I took them for about a month or three, and then, like my Vitamins, they fell off my radar.

I feel reflux only when I drink wine or a really sweet drink like a margarita, so I simply avoid those. I do chew tums quite often if I drink fruit juice but other than that, I'm fine.

Daily coffee drinker, here, too. ;)

There was a new study released that shows long term usage of PPIs can lead to kidney disease and dementia later in life. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/heartburn-drugs-ppi-prilosec-nexium-prevacid-risk-of-dementia/

I would ask your doctor about the new findings, and if they need to be taken longer than a few months. Most people don't need them, or could be switched to something else if they continue to have issues.

I'm glad I was only on them for a short while... I have enough mental issues already without adding in dementia! :D

I guess at least I won't know when I get kidney disease since the dementia will have already set in. LOL.

I need a PPI almost every day due to heartburn and reflux. Sometimes I can go a few days without it before it starts to flare up again. It's only a minor annoyance. I am 20 months post op.

... especially when used as a prophylactic.

Images of condoms just popped into my head.

That was very titillating -now this word is causing images in my head.

Based upon some recent studies with long term usage of PPIs and Calcium absorption/bone density (thinning), someone should only take it long term or permanently based upon their GI, PCP or surgeon's recommendation because of severe GERD or the risk of an ulcer is greater for them.

I am 6 months out. I stopped taking them after a couple months. I only take them now when I need them, which isn't very often.

I was prescribed Prevacid for 30 days. They asked us to take it even if we not have heartburn since it can help with stomach acid healing. I think just with everything else (pre-op/post-op diet) each surgeon is different. I plan to follow my surgeon's advice unless I had big concerns about something.

I had GERD pre-op so surgeon had me keep taking the Nexium for the first 3 months after surgery and then told me to try it without. No issues since I stopped it.

I suck at meds, and often have to make the choice between Vitamins or reflux meds because of the way they interact. I feel totally fine without them, so I wonder if there will be any detrimental effect by not taking them? I was sleeved 11/9. I had some reflux to begin with, but that seems to have calmed down as I healed.

I was sleeved in April of 2015. I took them for the first month after surgery. I have not taken them since.

Ask the only person whose opinion should matter to you and your surgery---your surgeon.

You can use all of the posts on this thread as discussion fodder, but when all is said and discussed, it's your surgeon's opinion that should mean the most.

Take care and feel better.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
