Is anyone not taking reflux meds post-VSG?

Recommended Posts

I suck at meds, and often have to make the choice between Vitamins or reflux meds because of the way they interact. I feel totally fine without them, so I wonder if there will be any detrimental effect by not taking them? I was sleeved 11/9. I had some reflux to begin with, but that seems to have calmed down as I healed.

I took PPI drugs until about 6 months out and then stopped. Probably could have stopped sooner probably. Doing fine now.

Sleeved in October 2015.

Have yet to take any type of meds for reflux.

FWIW, I drink coffee every day, take Advil on occasion and enjoy cocktails on the weekends.

I have, however.....cut way back on spices I use in foods. Not so many jalapeños and never any habaneros these days.

So far, so good.

I don't take them and I've not had any problems. The potential issues with long term PPI use are a lot scarier to me than potential stomach ulcers, especially since there is hard, published evidence of problems caused by long term PPI use and I'm not aware of any published studies showing important benefits to VSG patients provided by long term PPI use, especially when used as a prophylactic.

I was sleeved November 16th and have never taken a PPI. I've never had any issues or reasons to take one.

My surgeon prescribes a PPI for all his patients for the first 2 months and then you are supposed to try to go off of them. If you have issues with GERD at that point, then you go back on them, if not you stay off of them. So if you aren't having any acid issues, I don't see why you would NEED to be on a PPI....

Thanks for all the responses. My doctor prescribes them for 1 year, but it seems a little....excessive. I seem to be doing better without them than I do with them.
