Clear or puree after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Tomorrow marks a week since by bypass. My team advised a puree diet after the barium x-ray (the following day) to make sure nothing leaked.

I feel like everywhere I read, people started on clear fluids for up to 2 weeks. I understand each surgeon & nutritionist is different, but it makes me worry I'm going too fast! I keep reading the information to make sure I'm doing the right thing, and I'm pretty sure I am.

Why does it differ so much??

I don't know why it differs so much, but I was sent home on full liquids. You'll be great!

Every doc is different. I was on Clear Liquids only for the first 7 days, then full liquids for another 7 days and then puréed for 2 weeks. Then I was released to soft foods until I was 8 weeks post op. At 8 weeks I was fully released to a high Protein, low carb well balanced diet.

they had me on puree even before I left the hospital. Was on it for four weeks, I think - then I went on soft foods until month 3.

I was on clear liquids for less than 24 hours after surgery. They gave me a shake before I left the hospital to make sure I felt okay while drinking it. I started on puree a week after surgery, after my first check-up with them. :)

Everything is so new right now & you always wonder if you're doing the right thing.

Thank goodness for online resources :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
