Advice on surgery date

Recommended Posts

I have been driving myself crazy trying to decide if surgery in April or June would be better. I'm a teacher, so I'll have 8 weeks off for summer, wouldn't have to get a substitute, less disruption for my students, and more time before I have to return from surgery. If I do surgery in April, I will be able to do more intense exercise all summer and have a head start on my recover before summer starts. I've done a pros and cons list and I'm even for both dates. Do you guys have any ideas?

Many people are back to work within a couple of weeks. Some people have reported being back to work as soon as a week without difficulty. Perhaps that's something to consider especially if your job isn't physically demanding.

Why not may?

There isn't much difference between April and June, especially if it is early June.

Go with your gut. Yes, some people bounce back fast but for some it can take some time to get back into the swing especially energy-wise.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Oh, I'm sorry, I realized that you asked why not May, not why not many. April 4 is the earliest the surgeon could get me in, so that is the date I have scheduled, I'm just feeling like maybe I should wait to do what is best for my students and wait until June. If it's May, I just feel like I might as well wait until June.

I also work in education. My supervisor wanted me to wait until June. I was glad I did because I had a couple of strictures early on, and also, strictures or not, I had to figure out by trial and error what foods my pouch would tolerate. There were a handful of times I was in the bathroom throwing up - or sitting at my desk feeling odd. I guess it would have be OK during the school year, but I was very glad I had the summer to adjust to my new life....and to deal with any minor problems that might creep up. I had almost no pain and was back at work in two weeks, so that wasn't an issue - but the first few weeks post-surgery can be tricky. Or they were for me, anyway.

Why not many what?

Why not a May surgical date? You only listed April or June.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
