So I'm starting my 6 month supervised diet tomorrow. When I had my first appointment with the dietician they gave me a handout that had information about a liver reducing diet and told me that is what I should follow. It's basically high Protein low carbs.

While doing research though, I found things that said this diet is only needed for a couple of weeks before surgery to shrink your liver, not for the full 6 months.

Did anyone else have to follow this type of diet for the 6 month supervised weight loss before surgery?

It may not be called a "liver shrinking diet" but pretty much everyone eats the same diet in the months leading up to surgery. high Protein low carb is a healthy diet for pretty much everyone and it's the first thing a dietitian or nutritionist will implement anyway. I did it for almost 7 months, not at any insurance requirement or anything, but because that's what the nut instructed.

I had nutrition counseling for 3 mos prior to surgery. Over that time I would have regular phone conversations and the primary objective was to improve eating habits and cut away processed sugars in preparation of post-op. I didn't have a traditional diet but had a guidebook that made suggestions on things to improve over several months (mainly breaking habits and start healthy living lifestyle).

My pre-op diet was 2 weeks prior to surgery that was the liquid diet. Every nutritionist and surgeon is different. But, follow their recommendations as they all have the same intentions: improved health and wellness.

I had to eat a really healthy diet, approximately 2300 kcal a day. Healthy as in lean meats, low-fat dairy, Beans, whole grains, fruit, vegetables. She gradually brought my Protein level up (which decreased my hunger). I had to give up simple carbs (sweets, chips, etc) and soda. Towards the end I also had to gradually wean myself off caffeine until I was completely off. I also had to practice some of the behaviors I'd need post-surgery - like not eating & drinking at the same time. I actually was really happy with that diet - I felt very good during that whole time and lost about 50 lbs.

I suppose all dietitians are a little different, though...

According to my lists the only things I can eat are meats and cheeses and a few vegetables. No fruit at all.

I'm just really worried that I won't be able to do it. I want to and I hope that I can, but I'm afraid that being on such a strict diet for the 6 months leading up to surgery is just setting me up for failure. ????

oh yea - that exactly mimics the first few months of the post-op diet. I'm glad my dietitian "eased" me into it gradually rather than had me jump in full force! That would have been too drastic

Hello everyone! I had to do 2 weeks of 6 small meals per day of 110grams or more Protein and 80g or less carbs and journal it all. Then, I progressed to the liver shrinking diet of same protein but carbs cut to 20g or less for 3 weeks and right up to surgery which is this Tuesday, February 16, 2016. I have lost 20 lbs and 10 inches from my torso!! YES 10 INCHES. My surgeon was very, very happy with my sticking to the eating plan. It was not easy at times but it sure paid off for me. Tomorrow, I get to drink the Magnesium Citrate bowel prep and have only Clear Liquids. Then, Tuesday, nothing by mouth as I will be checking in to the hospital. I am a little nervous!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
