Recommended Posts

Thanks, Greg. Whether you get a chart or just a list of stats, it will be great. Congratulations on the news about becoming a grandpa! When will that be? That is awesome. :Bunny

We are freezing up in No. CA too, Lisa. It got down to 48 degrees. Brrrr.... That ocean breeze feels real cold. My friends are loving the hats. :D I think we might have to wait for the spring thaw for that nude photo. :D

Oops, was today the day we were supposed to start something? Hmm, I looked outside at the rain and made a cup of xtra sweet cappucino. How does that convert to calories burned? I did get angry at husband's clothes all over the house so that's gotta burn something (prolly brain cells with my luck.)

1:05 walking the dog, fast. . . I am so ready for this, I really need extra motivation over the holidays. Last year I gained 10 lbs. in the last six weeks of the year. I'd love to LOSE 10 lbs., but I'd be happy if I simply didn't gain anything this time around. I'm starting weight-training today, just a little bit at a time, hoping to lose my bingo arms by next summer.

Greg, at the rate you're going, it won't be long before you'll be able to hide behind a birch tree, grandchild and all.

DeLarla, we Upper Midwesterners do not want to hear how cold 42 degrees is. In November, that's warm to us. And by the end of the challenge in January, it will seem absolutely tropical. Put on a sweater and suck it up!

Well, I just volunteered to help walk a disabled man's dog four days a week. So that should help keep me going.

Lisa, um. . .I'm going to send you the definition of exercise. Now, exercising your options may have actually added brain cells, but getting mad at your husband burned them, so you're back to square one! Love your "Science experiment" label. You are so funny. But truly with this band and a few other bionic parts I sometimes feel like a science experiement, too.

It got down to 29 degrees in my part of Oregon last night so no more whining from the Desert rat direction. LOL. Glad to see everyone join this challenge! Teresa

You guys just don't understand how the air is different in DeLarla's part of the country -- and mine. Or maybe just how smart we are not to live in the frozen wastelands. :D

Off I go to exercise, options and all. :D

Y'all are use to that cold weather though. When I lived up in the cold it didn't bother me as much, but since I moved down here, I can't take any cold at all. It gets 40 degrees and I freeze to death!

Yeah, Betty and Teresa are cold, too! Really, I do feel sorry for you peeps who are in the icy regions. It must be hard to exercise when your nasal passage freeze over. Ouch! Be sure to wear your hats!

Let me modify my excuse: I love the cold, and I love the rain. But I'm NOT allowed to walk without my dogs (they won't stand for that.) And they'd be soaking wet when we got home and would stink up my house and furniture worse than it already is. If that excuse doesn't work, then I'll go with old-fashioned laziness. Off to a bad start on this challenge, plus I'm going on another road-trip to California Wednesday. How am I gonna drive 10 hours without all the good junk food munching?

That cold stuff isn't fit fer humans! That's meant for moose!

That's why I haven't posted an avatar photo -- a drawing of Bullwinkle is close enough!

OK, OK, I'll do it. My three-month bandiversary is the day after Thanksgiving; I'll post my horrid before picture, along with a current one I'll get taken over the next few days (not, however, while I'm draped over a recliner suffering from tryptophan overdose). Consider yourselves warned.

Back on topic, it's not too late to join the exercise challenge. See how much you can move between now and Jan. 3! Check Greg's recent post for details.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
