My primary was totally supportive of me having surgery.

Do the math on paying 2 insurance policies and meeting out of pocket expenses. Add it up and compare it to paying for surgery. If you have surgery and pay out of pocket in the US are doctors still refusing to see you? That doesn't even make sense. Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas has a good program at a good cost.

Also there is a whole forum here dedicated to surgery in Mexico. You might get better answers there.

Doctors are not refusing to see me if I remain in the US. I am having problems finding someone to see me if I go to Mexico (like originally planned).

Well that just seems extremely silly. Why would they be any more confident that some random US doctor won't butcher you than a Mexican surgeon? Maybe you could do some research about which Mexican surgeon you might use and then bring the info on that surgeon's credentials to your PCP?

It sounds like your decision is made. Good luck with your surgery.

Is it an option to pay out of pocket and have it in the US? I think most places do payment plans. Maybe cheaper than adding the additional insurance?

I want to use one of the BaratricPal doctors. I think I'm going to end up going the Mexico route.

I have a consult with a doctor nearby, if they want me to pay the balance off before surgery, then I might as well go the simplest route and travel to Mexico.

When I looked into financing before I found out insurance would pay for it, they just required that the loan was approved before surgery but you have like 3 years to pay it off with an interest rate as low as 3%. Might be worth looking into.

UPDATE: I met with Dr. Nicholson here in Dallas and decided to go an alt route. Surgery will only cost me $3,900. Cheaper than Mexico so looks like that is the way to go. No psych eval and all of that. I'm hoping to have it done in April. YAY

Glad you found a surgeon you are comfortable with! Hope all goes very well. Be sure to post back and let us know once you're on the losers' bench. And of course feel free to post with all the normal pre-op questions, concerns, anxiety, etc.

I went to Mexico and had a great experience. I've actually been to Mexico for two different surgeries and both times I received excellent care. If money is tight and time isn't of the essence, then you could try to go through your insurance again now that you have been diagnosed with a comorbidity. If you have the money and would prefer to not have to wait to jump through all the hoops with your insurance, then Mexico is a good option. Just make sure you do your research and choose a surgeon you are comfortable and confident with.

Where did you go in Mexico? And what Dr did you use. I need a revision from lapband to gadtric bypass or sleeve. But im on a budget cant go over $5700. Just dont no where to go.

For my VSG I went to Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center in Tijuana. I am not sure you could get your revision with him for under $5700, though. You should contact OCC about their current pricing.

There are many other excellent surgeons in Mexico, though that might be in your price range. My first suggestion would be to contact BariatricPal's Mexico coordinator, @@Bill Yanez. He could give you current information on pricing with the BariatricPal affiliated surgeons.

I am seriously considering Dr Ortiz for vsg this fall. I have so many questions though. Their marketing is excellent & I am looking for some criticism as he seems perfect. Is he and staff as good as they appear to be?

I am so anxious about this surgery.

Please respond

I would say my one "complaint" about Dr. Ortiz is the limited interaction I had with him. I never spoke to him ahead of the surgery. The day of the surgery, he came and visited me in my room for maybe 10-15 minutes before-hand and then I never saw him or talked to him again. I was fine with that, though. The OCC team is EXCELLENT and answered all of my questions pre and post-op. I never felt abandoned or neglected in any way. Dr. Ortiz is a very very busy man so I didn't really expect a whole lot of personal attention from him. He was very nice and friendly during our brief visit, though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
