Recommended Posts

I started this process in December and am hopefully going to be having surgery in ...May/June I'm not sure yet depending on my insurance and how quickly I get all the things done my surgeon needs me to (testing and scopes and all that mumbo jumbo) I'm I'm search of a surgery buddy. Someone who is having surgery close to the same time I am.

that's the time frame I'm on too! Got my cardiac testing done yesterday - I'll get the results Monday when I see the cardiologist again so hopefully he'll sign off and that will be one hurdle down.

@@TiffanyLM That is the time frame I am looking at as well. I have to complete 90 days of supervised diet by my primary care doctor. So I will complete that May 16th. I would expect to have a surgery date soon after that as I plan to have everything else completed that I can before May 16th. I was sort of discouraged about the 90 days but as I read some have to complete much longer then that so I am trying to be patient.

My issue now is im trying to do the diet the dr has me on. Low Fat. Obviously if diet would work and keep the weight off I wouldn't need surgery. But i am nervous Im going to lose to much weight. If i fall below 40 BMI the insurance will deny me. I do have prehypertention and i am currently logging 30 days of BP for the dr. So i guess we will see how that goes.

I will be in May/June as well! I have the supervised diet portion finished. I am waiting for my sleep apnea test and the pulmonary clinic was booked out until the end of March???? Once o am done with that I should be able to schedule! I am planning on mid-may. I want to have enough hours of leave built up so I don't have to use FMLA. I work in HR so I don't want everyone in my office knowing what I will be out for. Happy to find some people to journey with!

@@Lindsey Skinner Abbott I am with you on the coworkers. I have not told any of them as of yet. NOt sure I want to but then I am not sure where I would tell them I will be gone for two weeks. I still have a while to figure that one out. LOL.

No one has said anything about a sleep study being a prerec. or anything but I do hear so many having that done. Is that for the insurance of the surgeon? Have you been approved by your insurance yet?

I started the process in December too but unfortunately, my insurance requires 6 months of physician supervised diets so I won't be able to have mine until July/August. Keep us updated on your progress!

Lol sorry I am doing this on my phone! I am telling everyone at work that I am have a hernia repair...it's not actually a lie because the doctor is going to fix that! The sleep apnea test is a requirement of my surgeon. The place I am having it done is a center of excellence. In order to keep that my surgeon has everyone do that.

I think I will email my bariatric coordinator and ask her. This place is center of excellence too so I bet I have to have that as well. Do you have to stay the night in the hospital?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
