Post Gastric Sleeve- Not Loosing Weight-Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 1/19/16 and my weight at surgery was 267.5 lbs. I am lucky in the fact that i have not had any complications and everything has gone pretty smoothly. The first two weeks after my surgery, I lost 10 pounds (my surgeon said that was a normal amount). I am now starting my second week of the pureed diet and I haven't lost any weight since my last check up (over a week ago). I know that it hasn't been very long and I shouldn't really be weighing myself but I wanted to see if this was normal. I know of a number of people who had the surgery and lost a ton of weight in the first month and I feel like I am not loosing at the same pace. I follow all my directions and have been getting about 80 grams of Protein and about 700-800 calories a day (my doctor wants me at 800-1000). My clothes do not really feel any different and I just feel like I stopped loosing weight as soon as I went on to the next phase of pureed foods.

Thank you!

Avery

Well, you are losing weight. You lost 10 pounds the first two weeks. You are now starting your third week, a time where it is well documented the body stalls. Happened to me and many many many others on here. I actually stalled at 2 and 3 weeks. Do a search for the 3 week stalls and a very good post about embracing the stall floating around here.

I had mine on 1/18/16, lost 20lbs in the first 10 days, then gained back 6 and have stalled. I'm encouraged that at least I'm not the only one who has stalled, but the weight gain is what has me worried. Guess we'll have to have patience and wait it out, which is always fun...

I gained 5 pounds the first week after surgery. I then lost for a few weeks and then stalled for THREE WEEKS! This is pretty much how it has been for me. I started at 294 was 260 on surgery day and now at 139 in nine months. My hubby was losing 3 and 4 pounds a day for awhile. I have learned that I cannot compare myself with anyone because it is YOUR journey. Everyone's body and ability are different.

Had surgery on 1/15/16. Lost 17 lbs in the first two weeks. Like clockwork, the day after my two week post-op appointment, the scale went up 2 lbs and I've been trying to get that weight off for the past ten days. I haven't lost a single ounce since that point. It's super discouraging and frustrating, but reading that this three-week stall is common definitely helps! ALSO, measure yourself! I've lost four inches in my waist in the past 10 days while the scale hasn't budged!

Yes, it is normal.

None of us lose weight at a constant or steady rate. We all experiences of slow weight loss or periodic stalls.

Almost everyone experiences their first stall about three weeks after surgery.

Embrace the Stall!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
