I've Taken The First Step

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I’ve visited this site a couple of times and you seem a friendly bunch. I’ve taken the first step and put my name down for a free information session. I have to admit that I’m feeling pretty apprehensive but so far my research suggests that this might be a good way to go.

At this point I should introduce myself. I’m a 53 year old male living in Brisbane, Australia. I have always been heavy, but over the past 10 years my weight has increased and I now have a BMI of almost 40. As a result I have sleep apena, late on-set diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and minor kidney malfunction. I’ve tried traditional type diets, a couple of fad diets and my doctor has had me on appetite suppressants. The suppressants worked for awhile but then the bad habits returned along with the weight.

The thing that appeals to me about a lap-band is that it’s permanent and should solve or at least reduce some of my health issues.

I’ll let you know how my information session goes and what I decide to do. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Hamster and welcome. This is a great place for information and support. Have you found the Australian threads yet? You might find some bandsters close to you.

Good luck with your journey.

Same here, I have been reading for a couple or months now and today decided to make the call, schedule my surgery and even sign up to the LBT so I could start posting, I have been reading the posts for a while now but never had the courage to sign up, so today was the day for me too!!!, the lap band for me is a chance to live a better and healthier life, since due to my overweight I have other problems like high blood pressure and diabetes,so I congratulate you on taking your first step too.

Anything I can help you with, will be my pleasure...TTL.:bounce:

Hey nice to see another Aussie here! Welcome! Im at pretty much the same stage as you Im going to a seminar on the 15th August. Im from Melbourne! these guys are great and so very helpful.

As for me Im a 28 year old female and need to do something about my situation fast. From what i have read and learnt from just chatting to everyone on here, this also seems the best option for me! Its a tool Ive been told 10000000000 times a tool that will only help and the rest of it is up to you, but i think its is a tool that will work for people like myself who has no idea what a small portion size is:lol: Anyway if you enter the chat room they are great and very helpful.

All the best with what ever you decide to do.:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
