Flipped Port

Recommended Posts

I went in today for my 2nd fill and couldn't get it:angry My port has flipped. I had my first fill 2 weeks ago. I can't imagine what I did to cause it to flip.:)

  1. Has anyone experienced a flipped port?
  2. How was it corrected?
  3. Were you put to sleep or was it done with local anestesia? (sp?)
  4. Is it alright to continue to exercise with a flipped port?

Hi there bigbaby- I was just banded Friday, but while I was waiting for surgery there was a gal just before me that had a flipped port. She went in and it was done under a local and was out with in 20 mins. I'm not sure its the normal but the Doc said it was not a big deal and real easy to fix. You may get some replys that have actually had it done. Good luck!

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts. I have an appointment this Thursday at 7:00 a.m to have my port put back in position. The nurse said that it would be performed with an IV. I won't be knocked out unless it's necessary.

Keep praying...I'll post again on Thursday afternoon and let you know all of the details.

Bigbaby,

I would be interested to hear the results. I went for a fill yesterday and it had been a really long time since I had gone for one and my port was completely flipped over too. They tried to inject from 7 different positions and everytime they hit metal. I am scheduled for surgery to have it flipped back over on August 16th. I'll be anxious to hear how yours goes.

I had my port revision yesterday, painful but no worse than the original surgery. Dr said it was flipped completely around so he removed some tissue and lower it alittle from it's original location. Also got a small fill so

back on the road hopefully!!

Speina-----Were you awake--or did they put you totally under??? I hope the pain will leave soon. I think that mine is flipped totally around also. Did your doctor say what might have caused it?

I had my procedure today and it went well. I thought it would be done locally, but I was under.:notagree It took approximately 20 minutes. I only have pain in the incision. The doctor went back through the same scar. I am on Clear liquids for 3 days and back to solid foods. Got a small fill also!!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers!!!

I had a flipped port repaired on 7/23. I requested local anthesthesia and my surgeon abliged - but he said that if it becomes too painful or something, they'll just put me under. As a result, they prepared me for a regular operation. He said he'd put me under if I wanted to, but I had to fly home that evening (from Denver to Wisconsin) and didn't want to feel all icky like the anthesthesia makes me feel. For the surgery, they used novacaine, just like at the dentist, and a vallium like drug. Probably a few others I don't remember..

Just before going in to the op room, they gave me some drug to relax. I was alert when we got in there, it was 11:08 on the clock. They asked me if I could move myself from the table I was on to the operating table, and I did. I then talked to them for a few minutes and fell asleep. I woke up on my own in the operating room as the surgeon was finishing. He told me he fixed my port and gave me a small fill. They asked me if I could move myself back to the other table to wheel me out, and I could. I got into the recovery room at 12:00. I slept off and on for about 1/2 an hour, got dressed by myself. They had me walk to a recovery chair, sit there for a bit, then I was done. We then went to IHOP for lunch and even ate a little bit. I felt totally fine the rest of the day and flew home no problems. I did have my sister there to drive me to the airport and chaparone me on the way home.. just incase.

He went trough the same port incision, so scaring will be minimal. I took my bandage off in about 4 days. No issues. I was just a little tender in the incision area.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Sheila

My surgeon puts a piece of mesh under the port and connects it to your belly so it is unable to flip.. you may ask your doc about doing that....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
