This calls for a joke to lighten the mood:

How do you know someone is vegan?

Don't worry, they'll f*cking tell you.

Whether it is "dead animal flesh" or "screaming dying plants" we are here because we all do not know how to eat either of them. I am happy to read all the different points of view and hope to try and balance what works best for me. Some of these posts are hilarious.

I was a vegan for about 2 years and vegetarian for a year after that, all leading up to my WLS. (Btw-- I am not a moral veg-eater. I used to eat meat, then got sick, and couldn't eat it anymore.)

In getting my sleeve done, my nutritionist and I devised a plan on how I'd be able to get my Protein in / keep the carbs low. I stuck vegetarian. I get my Protein from Protein shakes , meatless ground beef (I swear this actually tastes pretty good), Beans, eggs, cheese and Greek yogurt (which I had to build up a tolerance to). I'm getting about 70-80g of protein in daily right now. My nutritionist also has me taking B12 and Vitamin D every other day (so I'm not missing nutrients with my intake).

Oddly enough I was willing to attempt red meat / whatever to get my protein in, because I want to be very successful post-op, but when I tried it still made me really sick. ????

What is your blood type? The things your body is telling you that you need may very well be true for you. Some need animal Protein while others simply don't. I do agree and think the plans should be more individualized and based on blood type, knowledge of food, and desired life style.

The blood type thing is a theory. It's very interesting and certainly worth a try to see if it works for an individual (and I'm glad it works for you!). But as of now there isn't enough empirical evidence to make it a fact.

I do completely agree that individuals should work with a nutritionist or dietician or doctor (in person, online, through research on their own in books or whatever) to find an individualized plan that works for all their needs, desires and aspects of their lifestyle.

Yeah, lol.

There's one that says:

If you meet a vegan who does Crossfit, which one will they talk about first?

Friends, thanks for all the feedback. It wasn't my intent to spark a heated debate. For the record, I'm not a vegetarian. I went Veg a few years back and at times felt I would collapse and was always a big meat eater but my surgery changed the game, obviously. I still eat meat but much less of it. Not several times a day most days, but only when I crave it. Mostly I have been craving nuts, fruits, and raw chocolate and coconut oil based foods. I supplement with non-gmo Collegen Protein. I just hear the bariatric gospel of high protein, low carbs so much that I started to worry, but I did Atkins 20 years ago and I don't think it's healthy and that is basically what many surgeons' offices advocate.

Those lousy vegetables. I let those "screaming, dying plants" die in agony. I'll boil the "baby" carrots right in front of the full size carrots, slowly peel away the skin on onions and pluck the "eyes" out of the potatoes. :)

And now I'm SCREAMING, too! But with laughter. You're a funny dude, @@4MRB4PHOTO !

@@JupiterinVirgo ... glad you hopped back on here. You started a good thread. :)

What works for me is good food of all kinds. I'm an omnivore. Love my animal Protein, my plant Protein, and all other veggies, fruits and grains. And wine. And chocolate. And slow cooking.

I just eat a lot less of it all than I used to eat.

Semi-seriously, what's currently supporting my new, slim waistline and my love of food is clean cooking and slow cooking and using the freshest, most in-season, highest quality ingredients I can find.

Speaking of Mediterranean diets, tonight we're having whole wheat Pasta and spaghetti sauce made with Italian sweet basil sausage, with Romaine hearts and bleu cheese dressing, with garlic bread (for hubby), and red wine (for me).

That's what maintenance at our house smells like, folks. :)

I would also suggest Dr. Weiner's videos. This one especially caught my attention and makes sense to me. Listen to your body and instincts, definitely.

Edit: apparently I can't paste URLs, but check out Dr. Matthew Weiner on YouTube. He has one called "Weight Loss Surgery Patients, Eat your veggies first!!"

See if that makes sense to you.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
