Constipation after surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had problems with Constipation after surgery? If so, what do you do about it? I haven't had a bowel movement in over a week now and I'm getting concerned.

I took a laxative and after taking it once everything was fine and I haven't had issues since.

Unfortunately this is common! A true PITA! I was told to take some PhillipsMilk of Magnesia. It tastes horrible but I guess it works.

I was advised to take (up to 4 a day) Colace and Miralax, if needed. 1 Colace seems to keep me at a comfy spot.

I did move anything for two weeks. Doctor ordered me to drink a full bottle of magnesium citrate. It worked! Drink on an empty stomach then drink a lot of water! Its been a week after still no movement again. I was told to take miralax every 3days in 4oz unsweetened apple juice. I just figure I was slow before, I'm going to be even slower now.

Sure glad to read these posts. I've been wondering after surgery how you are able to get in Fiber for bowels (???). So I read here that it is normal to hit a few slooow downs! ????

Okay! I like the idea of Miralax in some juice/water. And in familiar with colace. My pre op instructions say to do Clear Liquids today and citrate of mag towards evening time. Appreciate the heads up. I'll make a note to ask about that before I'm discharged. I jut love this website ????????????????!

almost everyone has that - not just right after surgery, but forever! You got some good suggestions here. From here on out, you'll have to figure out treatments (or combos of treatments) that keep things moving for you.

Yes, I am 16 months post op and I have to take two doses of stool softener with a laxative to stay regular.

I am taking narcotic pain medicine daily since November but even before that I had to take it twice a day.

Thanks for all the suggestions! It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem and that it's actually common. I happen to have Miralax at home so I'm going to start with that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
