Mardi Gras and Lent - good excuse to give up something you've been using for a cheat?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 4 months post-op and I think I'm looking forward to Lent to give up the breadsticks I've been cheating with. Maybe full fat cheese too...I think it's a good excuse for the religious among us to refocus and be soooo grateful for what this surgery offers and to get back on track.

What are you giving up for Lent?

I always try and refrain from gossip and things like that. I do encourage my kids to give up a food related item. And we do no meat on Ash Wednesday and all Friday's during Lent.

I've tried to give up certain things for all of Lent and end up failing. I like the idea of all Fridays and Ash Wednesday . I can do that.

I am going to add a daily bible study and meditation/prayer. I think a Beth Moore series.

I am going to give up chocolate for Lent. I know I shouldn't be eating it, but some days when I REALLY REALLY REALLY just want something I give in and have a KISS or two or three. It's not good. So chocolate is it. I also love natural Peanut Butter with apple slices, but I think it can be a trigger food for me so that's going to be given up for Lent too.

I haven't had ANY alcohol since 4/1/2015 so I can't give that up :) I also do not drink any kind of soda. I could try to limit my coffee intake to 2 cups or less a day. When it's cold out I do love my Decaf hazelnut.

Chocolate and Peanut Butter - totally abstain and coffee - 2 cups or less.....BAZINGA. That's going to do it for this buffet Catholic! B)

Last year I gave up eating out for Lent. Which really helped me break a lot of habits. It was before I decided to have surgery, but it did help prep for surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
