Pre-op Liquid Diet Question

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 5, I'm starting to really feel dehydrated. I am curious what all can I drink, I hate artificial sweetener or flavored water so I'm currently only drinking Water. Is there anything else besides that? Tried Powerade zero but I just hate how sweet artificial sweeteners taste and the aftertastes. Any suggestions gladly accepted.

I used to have artificial sweeteners also. After 2 weeks of being sugar fre I have "reset" my body and I now use Splenda.

I'm doing pre op also and I drink gallons of tea with lemon....water, tea bag and lemon

Are you drinking Protein Shakes, at least 4 a day? That's 32 oz. of Fluid. If you eat Soup, that's another 6-8 oz. That only leaves about 24 oz. of Water to drink. I sip on water all day, but the Protein shakes really fill me up and provide me with some energy. I am on day 5 of pre op diet and, fortunately, my routine is working for me. I did eat a couple of sugar free popsicles today as a treat, but only 15 cal. apiece.

Your nut or dr should have given you a list of what you could have. I'd ask them as everyone is different

Get tea bags and brew your own tea, rather than buy ready made, then there's nothing in it other than what you add.

It doesn't have to be straight water, and if you are pre-op you don't need to be fastidious with caffeine. Hot or iced coffee or tea. For example Pure Leaf is widely available and they make some nice bottled iced teas, both green and black, and including unsweetened:

If you have a pitcher and want an all natural low sugar fruit flavored drink, mix a thin-sliced, peel-on lemon, lime or orange into some spring water and leave the fruit slices to steep for a few hours in the fridge at least - tastes very good and less than $2 per gallon. I first learned to drink that at a fancy Scandanavian hotel where they kept such pitchers out at meetings - the fruit flavor is subtle but really enhances plain water.

Nothing wrong with a little fat-free milk either and you can get organic if you are worried about hormones.

I was allowed sugar free Jello, pudding and light yogurt. All of that counted toward my liquid intake.

Milk, or yogurt drinks thinned to a milk like consistency, would all have been allowed on my pre-op had I chosen to do liquids instead of solid foods, so that's an option too.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
