Flying after surgery, and puréed foods

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on January 20, 2016 and I have a 6 hour flight coming up next week. I will be 3 weeks post op and will be in my puréed foods stage. I am wondering if anyone has flown at that stage, and what foods I can bring with me to eat at the airport and on the plane. I'm worried that I won't be able to bring food on the plane and that they won't have anything that I can eat. Also ideas on what types of foods I can eat when we go out while I'm away (because the group I will be with will be going out). Any suggestions and advice are appreciated!

You can bring packets of Protein powder and a collapsible funnel with you. Then just buy bottled Water or milk once you are through security and mix the Protein Powder into the bottle. A lot of airports also have thing like yogurt or cheese sticks for sale at various stands. Are you allowed cheese sticks in your pureed stage? I was. If you don't know, maybe you can ask your nutritionist ahead of time.

For eating out, you are going to be pretty limited to just Soups. Be careful to not eat any of the more solid chunky bits. Definitely do NOT eat the celery if there's celery in there. It's way too fibrous, even cooked.

Definitely bring Protein powder. You can always bring an empty shaker bottle with you, too, and fill it up after you pass through security.

I'd bet you could find a yogurt in the airport.

As for going out, it's a little tricky with purée. eggs were on my purée list, so if it happens to be a diner, you might be ok. Some Soups will work, too. A bisque or something you can sip the broth out of. Also, you didn't hear this from me, but someone once said all food is purée if you chew it enough! So, if you can only find a bean Soup or soft white fish, just chew and chew and chew!!

Oh yeah. I was allowed eggs and refried Beans partway through my pureed stage, so those might be some extra options.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
