How many clear liquids can you consume without discomfort?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 days post op. My doctor has me on Clear Liquids for a week. I don't feel any hunger, but I am curious as to how many clear liquids you can drink without feeling "full". Last night I was able to drink 8 full ounces of Water in an hour without an issue and probably could have had more. Is this normal, or is this a sign that the surgery didn't work? I am just so paranoid this was all for nothing. I thought my stomach shouldn't be able to hold more than a few ounces?

You're doing great! It just means that the swelling has gone down quickly and you're able to get liquids in. Once you move to food, you'll feel the restriction.

Clear liquids go through what's left of your stomach almost instantly. Don't worry you will feel the restriction once your able to eat something with density.

Liquids go straight through your sleeve. The only reason some people experience restriction with liquids very early post-op is because of swelling. If you can get more in, then more power to you! You aren't going to damage or stretch your sleeve with liquids. I promise.

That's an ounce every 7 1/2 minutes......not so bad since it pretty much goes through quickly.

I'm so jealous! I'm 2 days post op and having the hardest time with my fluids. I'm still in the hospital because of it. I have a very hard time with more than an ounce every 20 minutes.

yes super jealous. i am almost two weeks out and still have trouble with liquid consumption. i was never a big drinker while not eating beforehand though so I'm sure it will just take an adjustment. i will say, today i was cleared for my first food. had a scrambled egg and now i am SO thirsty!! a few more mins and i will be able to drink again!

I would stop drinking at least 30 minutes before bed. If you are having acid issues laying down with a stomach full of Fluid can cause you some issues.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
