Hungry after bypass

Recommended Posts

I am exactly one week post op gastric bypass. I must say I think I am recovering well. I feel pretty good and I am without pain already.

My question is, is hunger at this point normal? Is it even real hunger?

I feel hungry at different points throughout the day, and this concerns me because I thought I would not be hungry. My full liquid meals satisfy me for a little while. I am eating exactly what the doctor told me to. I am getting enough Protein and Fluid in.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a bad thing?

Part of this is head hunger and habit. The other part might be real hunger while your body is trying to figure this all out. Things will regulate as time goes on. Keep drinking that water!

It could be acid reflux which can mimic hunger feelings. Are you taking a PPI? If not, try Zantac. It helps.

Don't worry. It won't be until you reach the solid stage that you will notice the absence of hunger. In some cases, what individuals experience is described as head hunger. Many people report a strong desire to chew. When you are on full liquid and puree stage, you are not chewing your foods. Chewing is ingrained within us. Digestive fluids are released when we chew. It is a part of our normal eating process. Thus many people miss this function at least until they enter the solid stage. Time will pass quickly and you will be in the solid stage before you realize it.

I forgot to take my PPI yesterday. I read something about that last night and I'm going to see if it makes a difference today. Thank you

Are you really getting in all of your Water and Protein at one week post op? For me that was absolutely impossible because of the swelling inside.

I ask because dehydration can feel exactly like hunger. You should not have a lot of stomach acid because you had bypass and the hunger hormone itself should not yet be present.

So it realistically could be dehydration or head hunger and as James said that need to chew something. I remember that feeling as well and it really can mimic hunger.

Completely normal. Go back to basics. Make sure you're intaking all your Protein and Water. If you need to space out the fluids so you're always sipping on something.

I remember being very excited about being able to chew my chewable Vitamin back at that stage!

For me, it's more about NOT having that feeling of satisfaction during the post-op liquid stage; but God knows I had the luxury of filling my stomach with tons of satisfying foods over the years, which eventually led to various parts of my body being damaged, thus leading me down the path of RNY-GPS to help with the repair. ???? I'm learning to manage this part of the process too--it's not easy, but I believe it's possible. I keep telling myself that all-around satisfaction will soon come.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
