Surgery Scheduled for March - no Pre-op Diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet. is this normal? it seems everyone is on some type of liquid diet prior to surgery. Thoughts?

P.S.

I have a slipped lapland and is being converted to bypass, not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Maggie

Some don't require it. My friend and her husband both had sleeves done with no preop diet. ::shrugs::

My surgeon said it depend on your BMI. If it's really high then you have to do the diet. I don't have to do one either and no bowel prep!!

Pre-op diets primarily target shrinking the liver to make it easier for the surgeon to move out of the way, and give them more room to work with. Like said above....it usually depends on your BMI.

My surgeon did not require a pre-op diet, only to make sure I only had liquids for a day and a half before and then no food or drink at all for the twelve hours before surgery. And my bmi was 65 the day before surgery. It was actually higher when she gave me the surgery date, because I did my own pre-op diet and lost about 10 pounds from it.

Gee, I wish incident have to have all the pre op diet, but do ????. Im almost done. It's been kind of boring, but doable. I do clear liquid and citrate of mag this Sunday. Wish you all the best!

I have no pre op diet, no liver cleanse either. Just no food the day prior to surgery and drink a bottle of mag. citrate the prior afternoon (& probably poop all night!). My surgeon says the liver cleanse thing is kinda dubious in that it's not going to clean out your liver much, and losing weight is the whole purpose of having the surgery anyway. BTW: my BMI is 52.5.

I have surgery in March as well. I have to do the pre-op for 7 days. My BMI is 36. Dr. requires all their patients to do it to shrink liver to make it easier to manuever when performing surgery. So just depends on the dr.

Thanks for everyones' input! I really appreciate it, mine is coming quicker than normal due to band slippage so just trying to prepare as best as I can. :)

I am a revision patient as well and my dr requires two weeks of liquids, lap band removal (which I had Friday,) then 4 more weeks of liquids in-between before my bypass on Match 10th. So when all is said and done with post-op diet, it will be three months before I can have a single bite of regular food. Still totally worth it.

Even for regular bypass patients, they require 2 weeks of liquids to shrink the liver and initiate the weight loss process.

If you are obese you are more likely to have a fatty liver which is heavy and oversized. This can intrude in the doctors field of vision and be more difficult to move out of the way. It's just a step to make the doctors job a little easier and hopefully reduce your surgery time (reducing risk of complication etc etc etc) but your doctor may not require it for a number of reasons :)

I have a 3 week preop diet of regular food just no starches and 2 days before Clear Liquids only so not all drs require a liquid preop diet

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
