HOLA, Just Back from Dr. Joya

Recommended Posts

Goodmorning all I just came back from Mexico at about 2 a.m. last night. I wanted to report to all of you how my band experience went since I relied on this website to inform and guide me through the process so here goes....

I have been looking on here for about 3 weeks, I have been thinking about this surgery for about 1-2 years. When I made the decision I went to my local surgean, He said he would do it but it would take 4 to 6 mos with all my pre op stuff, psych, diet, etc and it would cost 25K.

Oh by the way my insurance would not cover it, big surprise.

So I got on this site and learned about Mexico. After tons of time and hours of research I decided on Dr. Joya out of Puerta Viarta (Spelling?) I looked at everything and talked to lots of his patients, I called two weeks ago and Gerald (planner guy) got me started on the pass port(I did not have one) when I got my application(right now you can fly in to Mexico with the application, birth cert, and id) I called him Thursday he set me up for the following day to fly down, I had my surgery Friday afternoon and was on the beach by Sat. afternoon. I got home at 2 yesterday morning (my flight was canceled, I definatly recommend a straight shot...no lay overs).

So what do I have to say? Well the hospital was great, very clean, nurses were very young and they do not speak very good english, be prepared for that. I like that they did not fuss over me, I recovered on my own and called if I needed them. I do think all the docs should wear name tags, they all looked alike to me and I would have liked to know who was who.

I did have some discomfort after surgery, i should of read more on that, I laid flat, perhaps if I would have slept upright the pressure in my chest due to gas would have been lessoned but it passed in 24 hours.

I would have enjoy Mexico one more day, it was beautiful and the hotel the doc puts you in is fabulous. I had a massage on Sat (after my release) that lasted 2 hours and costed 30 US $ Sunday morning I did a facial (that last 1 1/2, costing 35 $) Those were out of this world.

The worse part of the trip was my flight home, the lay over sucked and the weather did not cooperate, all things out of Dr. Joyas hands. Would I recommend him, so far yes, the over all experience was good, I am doing well, so far. I will keep you posted. Good luck to you and if I can help ans your ? please ask, I think I remembered everything.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
