Acid reflex – only when sleeping?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks post op

Does anyone else get that burning in the throat while sleeping? I am taking dexilant but that is not helping as I wake up with a score throat every morning….

Is this something from the sleeve?

Sleeve has higher incidence of acid reflux. Things that have helped me is to not overeat ( lol, it happens), don't go to bed too soon after eating, and no carbs in my evening meal.

The first few months post sleeve most people take a PPI like Nexium or Proselec. I haven't needed it since, but it makes alot of sense to protect yourself while things settle down. In addition to what was mentioned, the stomach at first makes more acid than is needed for the new smaller size.

I was prescribed a PPI (omeprazole) for the first two months post-op. It is very common for sleeve patients to experience GERD. My suggestion would be to take a PPI before bed (like Prilosec OTC), and see if that helps.

I am suffering with reflux that started post surgery. I take 40mg protonix in the am, 60mg dexilant before my evening meal and 150mg Zantac before bed. This was all on doctor's orders. The Zantac before bed really helps the acid from coming back into my throat.

I learned that the hard way......going to bed too soon after eating. Now I try to eat 2 hours before going to bed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
