Kidney stones. Are they a setback?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! In the middle of pre-op now. Went to ER this morning and ended up having kidney stones.

Will this cause any setbacks?

It shouldn't. They hurt (as you know by now), but they are fairly common. The only thing I can see slowing you down is if you have a one that is too large to be passed and is blocking something - even then likely not an issue. I have a long history of stones (in fact passed a rather large one the day after my bypass surgery <_< ). I will tell you that there is some speculation that they could possibly get worse after surgery, but mine actually seem to be better (oddly). Even with, my endocrinologist and urologist were very happy for me to pursue WLS without worry. Some people have one incidence with them and then never have them again...

I was told years ago that a high Protein diet makes them more common. When Atkins diet got really big about 11 years ago I passed one and that's what the ER Dr said. True??? I don't know.

Kidney stones are another reason to be sure to drink PLENTY of Water to help keep your kidneys flushed out too.

I had my first kidney stone ever right after I started this process, like 3 weeks after my first visit with the surgeon. I am now days from surgery and it didn't effect anything. no worries! :)

I had kidney stones prior to my surgery and as long as you are healed up and your kidneys aren't damaged enough to need time to recover, it shouldn't have any impact on your having surgery. Water is your best friend though and wls in general does increase your chances for more kidney stones so water, water, water, even before surgery and after surgery sip sip sip your water and if your urine starts to get too dark, sip some more.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
