Tv/ Book suggestions....and questions...

Recommended Posts

So, there are a lot of us heading for surgery soon and will have a period of recovery after. For me that usually means two things...books and tv...and audio books.< /p>

So, I currently use the Overdrive app which if you do not have I would strongly suggest you consider downloading. It links to the library and allows you to rent digital books and audiobooks through the app. It's fabulous! I believe you can also rent movies although I haven't done that yet.

Audio books are wonderful for walking or working out. I find when I get into a great part in the book I'm want to continue my walk so I can hear what happens!

What are your suggestions for great books?

I'm into history so my suggestions are...

Devil in the White city

Sin in the Second city

Liar, Soldier, temptress, spy

As for television what do you watch? I know we have a Netflix thread but what are you watching on network tv or iTunes ?

I love ...

American Horror Story, all seasons (Fx)

Downtown Abbey (PBS)

Mercy Street (PBS)

The Knick (Cinemax)

Boardwalk Empire ( HBO)

Dexter ( Showtime)

Pan Am ( iTunes)

Mad Men (AMC)

Turn (AMC)

Broad church ( BBC & Netflix)

Bloodline ( Netflix)

Grace & Frankie ( Netflix)

I'm also a sucker for documentary films....

How we got to now ( PBS and Netflix)

Anything by Lucy Worsley ( BBC and PBS )

So, give me some suggestions on things to check out....

We live in a time when essentially our whole world (Earth) is known and everything has been explored. But if you stepped back a hundred years, the world was very different. It was filled with mystery and adventure. Years ago I read a book. It was called Sepoy's Daughter. The book didn't have a publication date or even an author. It is believed that the book was published in the 1860's. The author is given as "an eye witness". This link may get you in or get you very close.

https://books.google.com/books?id=cMIwAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=intitle:Sepoy's+intitle:Daughter&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjsp_zq3NnKAhXDr4MKHeihCHgQ6AEIHTAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

If you have problems, let me know and I will see if I can walk you to it.

If you like history, for reading I would recommend The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Fay. That's the first one in a trilogy. It's a mystery with great characters and takes place in New York in 1845 when the police force was just staring. I really enjoyed it.

I'm always looking for something good to read.

I just started watching London Spy on BBC America and absolutely love it. I'm anxiously waiting for the new season of The Americans, too. If you can get your hands on it, the Danish drama Borgen is amazing. Also have really loved recently: Humans, Top of the Lake, Bloodline, Orphan Black, Shameless.

I read a lot, and I'm a librarian, so I do love giving and getting book recommendations. For history lovers, here are some of my favorites:

The Complete Maus

We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families

Devil in the Grove

The Warmth of Other Suns

Hellhound On His Trail

The Family: Three Journeys Into the Heart of the Twentieth Century

Between Silk & Cyanide

The Demon in the Freezer

Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary

The Worst Hard Time

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

I mentioned it over in your podcast thread, but if you are a history nut, make sure to check out Hardcore History... He meticulously researches and explores every subject... and tells it all in an entertaining manner.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
