Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am 20 days post op and im only managing to eat about 300 calories daily. My Protein has been around 30-40 grams daily. I started back work this week and i am feeling so fatigued and weak. The problem is that i just cant force myself to eat. I feel so nauseous and i have absolutely no appetite. Does anyone have any pointers for me?

Of course you are feeling fatigued. You just had major surgery and need Protein and fluids to heal.

My advice, definitely talk to your NUT. You have got to get in enough Protein and fluids.

My protein target is 100 grams a day and I was able to reach it every day starting about the second day of surgery with one or two exceptions where I was only able to get in about 80 grams. My Fluid target is at least 64 oz a day and it took me a little more time to reach that target daily, but I worked hard to get it all in and always had at least 40-50 oz. early out. Fortunately, all fluids count toward that total which is helpful when on the Fluid stages.

You should be focusing on sipping protein and fluids like it's your job.

It is normal that you would be feeling weak and tired at this point. Early on there is a lot of swelling and that makes it difficult to get everything that you need to down.

I think I was about 8 weeks post op before I was able to get the full Protein and fluids down and that took great focus. It is difficult to do that when you are also focused on work. You might set a timer to go off every 5 minutes so you are sipping constantly.

Keep working at it and do the best you can but don't forget you won't feel better until you are fully hydrated and are able to get enough Protein. The minimum requirement for protein should be 1 gram for every inch you are tall.

i also had my troubles eating so I just concentrated on protein. I had 3 Protein Drinks a day. I used vanilla and crystal lite. Tasted like sa 50-50 bar. Progreso lite Soup with no flavored protein mixed in. Be sure to add protein to hot stuff slowly, stirring constantly. And than a Greek yogurt. That was pretty much it but it was a all day endeavor . I wish u luck. It does get better.

@@mizzmegan, you are doing great for 20 days post-op. If I recall my "goal" was to be at 50 grams by one month post-op and I struggled with that. As long as you are truly doing the best you can, that is all you can do. Just be sure you are drinking something ALL THE TIME! Because you are not at your Protein goal yet, I would make sure you are always drinking something with Protein versus plain Water at this point. It's a little overwhelming, but will get better!

Definitely talk with your nutritionist in regards to your intake. Your body has no energy due to limited calories and Protein. Intaking that few of calories will send the body into starvation mode and make it want to store any and all fat it can.

Post op your concern should be Protein and Water. If you have to takes sips every few minutes just to get 2-3 shakes in....the that's what you have to do. Your nutritionist will help provide ideas for different way to intake protein despite your nausea.

You guys have really made me feel better about this! I really thought i was failing badly at this whole thing! Lol. I have managed to up my intake a little bit in the past couple days and i have felt an increase in my energy. I had to slow down today because i have been having dry heaving spells and some soreness in my abdomen. It really came out of nowhere. Hopefully i feel better tomorrow. Thank you guys again, you have saved my sanity! Lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
