New to site - Will be banded Aug. 1

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am new to your site and thought I would like to jump in. I am going to be banded Aug 1st at Highland Park hospital, and was wondering if there was any last minute advice? I have thought about this for a year and still not 100% sure I want to do this. I want the weight loss, but not the change. I want to eat a steak after I lose the weight, maybe even a can of diet coke. I know these things will not happen, and losing the weight is more important, but I'm still not positive. I appreciate your words of encouragement and know in my heart this is the right thing. I need to lose 120 lbs and don't want bypass.

Thanks,

Steve from Chicago

congrats on your surgery date. I am about 7 weeks post band placement 2 fills. No regrets  22lbs down I can eat steak ( small bites and chewing well) Also I drink an occasional diet Coke (my Dr says okay to drink it) I am hopeful about my future. It is an adjustment I catch my self eating too large of bites and not chewing well. It is not like I look like a freak when i go out to dinner... I can eat most things just smaller amounts, No one would even notice :woot: Good Luck

Congrats on your surgery date. Don't worry about the eating part, I eat steak all the time. I can pretty much eat anything, just smaller amounts of it. As far as coke, I don't do any cokes but I am not much of a soda drinker, but I do drink tea.

:) Hi I'm Cherie and I'm also new here and scheduled for my surgery tomorrow on 8/1 as well. I wanted to wish you luck on yours. There will come a time when you can once again eat that steak and have the coke at least that is what my doctor told me.. but perhaps after this surgery you just might not feel you want it.. either way it's a good thing.. so smile and be happy that you just made a great decision in your life.. look forward to talking to you post-op

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
