How do you know when your full?

How do you know when you are full? For me it seems like I have pressure in my chest area. It's constantly gurgling or I feel like I have to burp!

I burp. Once that starts, I know it is time to stop eating.

If I tried to eat more, I'd regret it (early days, I'd throw up, now I'd just feel gross and really uncomfortable).

I say this in every post I am just so afraid of stretching it. I am stopping once I get that feeling. It usually is right before I finish the 1/4 of cup.

I feel some pressure in my chest. Sometimes get the hiccups. It varies. But I'm generally uncomfortable and soon quit. If I don't, the discomfort just gets worse.

@@Lisa_85 It's probably best to stop a little before you reach the point of being too full. I know I had to train myself early on to not eat to fullness. Before surgery the stomach would stretch to accommodate whatever we eat, within reason. After surgery the sleeve doesn't stretch like a regular stomach, so you can go from nothing to painfully full in just a couple of bites.

I'm 4 1/2 months out and still sometimes miss the signal and eat a little too much. I've gotten better with it as time has passed, but it is something you have to learn.

I promise, you can't stretch a brand new sleeve. What stomach you have left is very swollen and tender. But you're right to stop once you start feeling full, that's what the restriction of the sleeve is supposed to do for you.

The first 2 months I weighed every meal/snack at 2 oz. (1/4 cup) When my capacity or satisfied level got a little greater I weighed stuff to 2.5 oz. After the first few months I could more easily gauge when to stop... I am at 10 months and still cant eat more than 3.5 to 4 oz per meal of solid meat and veggies, a little more of yogurt or softer foods.

I know for a fact that if I burp, one single burp, that I am done. If take even one or two little bites after that I end up being slightly uncomfortable or downright overly full. I actually love that little burp by now.... I will take a bite and still be chewing and up comes this little burp and I tell my DH "Well, I guess I am done". He likes it too, lol, because he usually eats my leftovers. He is blessed with the metabolism to eat seconds, lucky guy.

A good talk with your psych, might help.

It is not really a feeling of fullness!

That is your 'old' way of thinking

Some replies are indicative of this old thinking also.

Welcome to the meaner leaner world you are seeking, where the 'new thinking' is a thought process that needs you to continually keep re-affirming that are not really hungry, don't need to eat all that stuff & leave what you don't need on the plate.

It does get easier, so don't despair.

One needs to stop eating when they don't need to, but still get enough 'good' food to sustain them, with the addition of Vitamins & minerals, your nutritionist should have explained.

Every so often your doc should order a comprehensive blood test to ensure you have no deficiencies.

If you stop eating you will stop losing weight.

Eat just right & it will keep falling off @ a constant rate with exercise, until you are @ or less than your doctor advised

I feel sorry for those where families expect no change in your eating habits or types of food that you now enjoy v/s the old you. I only have one to deal with!

It must be explained to them very clearly from the start of your journey, that things won't be the same.

You & only you must be unwavering & stick to what is best for YOU!

Early months I ate by the measuring cup and clock. Once my new tummy was healed, follow the mantra "eat to absence of hunger, don't seek out full"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
