Gastric sleeve with hypothyroidism

Recommended Posts

I have hypothyroidism and am seeking to do the sleeve. I'm right now going through my 6 month approval process for insurance. I know that with my thyroid issues it will be hard making the weight come off. Just wanting to know if anyone here has went through the surgery with this condition and if so how have you been handling it.

I'm hypothyroid too and am very interested in your question, though I don't have an answer for you! Next week I will meet with my surgeon's nurse, the sleep study doctor, and the nutritionist.

Although I am definitely hypothyroid (my daily dose of synthroid is 137 mcg), I have been able to lose weight at a good clip in the weight loss program I have used. I just have yet to keep it off - I have probably lost well over 100 pounds 4 or 5 times, including once on my own, and 50 or 60 pounds several times both in program and on my own as well. Finally, after years of rejecting the idea of surgery, I am going to take this next very big step! It helps that for the first time I have insurance coverage. Like you, I hope that being hypothyroid will not prove too much of a stumbling block. Based on my previous experience I am feeling cautiously optimistic. Fingers crossed!

One overdue thing I have decided to do differently this time is to work with a therapist to examine my issues with overeating. I haven't started this yet as I need to figure out which therapist my insurance will cover, but I am going to pursue it. I don't think this will be a fast fix but at least this way I feel I will have better odds of really being able to maintain my loss. I also decided to join the maintenance group offered by my old weight-loss program. Even though I will be going through surgery, I think it will help. My surgeon's office offers this too but he is 90 minutes away, while this other group meets right in town. The other option is to join my local Overeater's Anonymous. In either case, I am going to wait until I am somewhat thinner as I am too embarrassed to show up at my current weight, but I believe that change will come quickly on that front. For me, it's not the weight loss (which has been fairly easy for me) as much as the maintenance (at which I have failed to date) that needs addressing.

I wish you good luck, good health and success!

Have hope!! I have hypothyroidism and was on 300 mc of synthyroid a day before surgery. I struggled so hard and found losing weight difficult. I only lost four pounds on my two week liquid diet (and I didn't cheat). I was worried the surgery would not work me either.

Surgery day I weighed 271 pounds and about nine months later 150. I am over a year and a half post op and now weigh 145. My need for synthyroid medication has decreased to 88mcg a day. My weight loss wasn't that slow and I felt that I lost as fast as anyone else.

I wish you the best on your upcoming surgery. It's a wonderful life changing tool!!

Thank you @@glitter eyes . that gives me hope I am on 225 MCG right now. But my tsh blood work came back high so I'm sure she's going to raise the meds.

@my2siamese. Thank you. I have already had one visit with nutritionist had my sleep study and all the blood work but one. I've met with my surgeon and fcp once as well. 5 more months of visits and a few more tests and hopefully I will be ready to go!! So looking forward to it and the journey

I just got approved yesterday. I also have hypothyroidism. The surgeon office said at the beginning that my thyroid needs to be stable with medication, mine always has. I am also on a fairly low dosage though. My family DR. told me that as long as you are on the correct dosage of medication and routinely get your levels checked, you can lose weight, its just finding the right dosage that can be tricky. Hope this helps!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
