MsB7 64 Posted January 30, 2016 Has anyone had IBS and or GERD before WLS? If so how has it affected you after?
James Marusek 5,244 Posted January 30, 2016 I had severe acid reflux (GERD) before surgery. I had RNY 32 months ago and the GERD went into remission ever since surgery. Normally sleeve is not recommended for GERD patients because it can make the GERD condition worse.
MsB7 64 Posted January 30, 2016 Thank you for the info. I can't wait for the day to Not have any Issues. I was told by a few that it depends on how bad your GERD is. However lately I was told NO Sleeve because of It. So RNY it will be for me!
Jennifree 16 Posted January 30, 2016 I have had GERD my entire life. My RNY surgery is February 16. Is it typical for it to go away right after surgery, since you no longer have a big stomach to hold all the acid? My anxiety is kicking in since I start the liver reduction diet on Tuesday, and there is soo much acid right now... take Nexium daily, and don't want to have to buy more if I don't have to. My insurance "prefers" that I buy it OTC.

My insurance "prefers" that I buy it OTC. After surgery my surgeon prescribed Omeprazole (Prilosec) for the first year after surgery. This was not for GERD but for healing my stomach. So I was not officially able to tell that the GERD was gone until after I stopped using Omeprazole. I am 32 months post-op RNY and no sign of it. Also some of the symptoms of dumping syndrome mimic the effects of GERD.
