Not So Supportive Support Group

Recommended Posts

I had the Sleeve almost 2 years ago & it's been a struggle but worth it. My surgeon & her partner won't do the lap band because of the low percentage of success. My cousin & a friend had the lap band & both have gained all the weight back plus some more.

Our support group is run by the psychologist that I had to talk to before my surgery. This is a requirement by my doctor. BTW, if your Mom's band no longer works she should look into a revision. I was 70 when I had my surgery. I no longer use a CPAP & my oxygen use has decreased. Yay!!

So sorry you walked into that horror of a bashing session, @virgorooster.

As others have said, that wasn't a support group -- it was a free-for-all dominated by a few big-mouths who want to believe their experience is the only valid experience. Sheesh!

Don't you just love it when people think and say things like: "My surgeon is the best WLS surgeon of all!" when they had a single WLS and a single surgeon, with no basis for comparison. By their bragging, they're only justifying post-hoc the decision they made. Therefore, anyone who made a different decision threatens the decision they made.

Bless their hearts.

The surgeons that are doing my sleeve said they haven't done a gastric band in over two years because people have so much more success and are happy with the sleeve.

I am sorry they made you feel bad! Sounds like you are doing awesome and should be proud of your accomplishment! I hope your stall is over soon.

Everyone I know who has/had the lap band did not succeed. Don't let those negative nellie's rain on your spirit. I know an equal number of people who got the sleeve & they look FABULOUS! They say it's the best decision they ever made!! Logically the sleeve just makes sense. You have get fills w/the band , if not, your stomach is back to normal. I know 2 people w/complications from the band & had it removed.

You made the right decision. Eat your Protein (60-80 grams), drink your fluids and take your Vitamins. Work out, get moving and you should see some changes.

Good luck!!

I had the sleeve done over 3 years ago. I lost 98 lbs. with several stalls. I still can't eat more than 2-3 chicken wings. I have not gained anything back but could stand to loose about 40 lbs. I was a size 22-24 and now a 14. Don't get discouraged.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
