So I have a friend who is in desperate need of a kidney and is starting the search for a donor. I applied and got a call this morning. They told me that since my surgery was done in July they won't even consider me. That sleeved persons have to wait at least 10-15 years! But all research I have done has stated this is not a barrier to stop a donation.....So bummed!!

I had the same problem with being tested to be a bone marrow donor because of my heart issues it was a no go. I think it just means you are meant to help your friend in other ways.

I tried to donate blood and was turned away because I lived in Germany from 2000-2002. I don't understand why they take blood from anybody off the street (think the plasma centers that pay people) but living in a middle class life in Europe ruled me out do to the mad cow thing in Britain at the time.

10-15 years? what a strange number? I could see 12 months maybe, but why so far out?

Yeah I am not sure of the hows and whys. Just super bummed that my friend is so dependent on this and now I can't help. I know there must be something or some other way I am supposed to help.....but....

They told me that there are other complications for a bariatric patient than a "regular" patient.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
