How has gastric bypass effected you?

Recommended Posts

By my second day in the hospital, I was off pain meds and the morning of the 3rd day, they unhooked my IV's and stuff. I filled my pain med prescription when I went home, but I never used it.

This surgery will be one of the best decisions you ever make. You will be making a very positive and healthy lifestyle change that if you stick with it and stay determined will greatly improve your quality of life and those around you. I'm close to six months post RNY, down over 100lbs and still losing. No two people that have WLS end up with the same exact experiences, but I'm one of the many that was blessed to have an extremely easy time. No complications or extended pain from the surgery, stopped all my meds the day of surgery and have had excellent blood work and diagnosis since then. I've learned how to manage my eating habits, how to eat right and gained a ton of insight into being healthy. My biggest expense has been new clothes because I work in a profession that requires business attire, but it's one I'm happy to live with these days.

Most important lessons I've learned:

Drink your Water and make it your go to beverage.

Get your Protein in daily and don't cheat on it.

Take it easy after surgery and follow your doctors advice on your timeline to recovery.

Find a good Vitamin and a good probiotic and take them daily.

Your taste will definitely change in terms of what you like to eat and what you can actually handle eating.

Remind yourself daily that you're still a work in progress and success depends on your commitment to eating and living heathy.

Exercise will make you lose weight faster, make you feel better and needs to be part of your plan.

Learn how to take a compliment ( you'll get plenty from those that truly love and respect you) and ignore those people that only want to bring you down.

Good luck as you move forward with your journey, lots of great folks on this site for support and advice.

Hi, I had RNY on 4/8/15, and have lost a total of 112 lbs. Day of surgery I weighed 342 and now down to 228. Although I still have about 50 lbs to get to my goal weight, I feel wonderful. I'm starting to feel like me again. I was depressed and felt disgusted with myself. I have NO REGRETS what so ever. I haven't had any complications at all. When you eat your new tummy will let you know when you've had enough. It still amazes me how full I get so fast. I actually feel like a normal person when I eat. If you follow your doctors orders and put in the work you will succeed. This is just a tool to help you, but you have to put in the work and it's hard sometimes because occasionally you still crave for things you shouldn't but you have to remember that part of your life is over. That's why it really makes me mad when someone says this is the easy way out, because it's definitely not easy. Best of luck to you, and I believe that you will be fine and a year from now you will be giving this same advice to someone else????????

I'm 9 months post-op and it has been by far the BEST decision I've ever made. I haven't regretted it for even 1 day!!! This time last year I felt anxious like you as I'd just received my surgery date of 4/21/15. I encourage you do immerse yourself in every bit of knowledge you can. I went to post-op meetings before surgery and asked questions from those who'd already had surgery. They were a wealth of information. I don't think I could have been more educated prior to surgery and by the time my date arrived I was so excited. I had the nurses that prepped me at mayo, at 5 a.m. laughing and amazed that I was so calm and ready. Also take pictures the day before your surgery. It was really hard for me to do but now I'm so happy I did. When you go through a stall or start feeling down on yourself, just look back at where you started and you'll be so proud. I would have never believed at 54 years old I would have lost 105 lbs. at only 9 months post-op. In my 9 month post-op pic, my jeans are a size S and my top a M. Before surgery I was wearing a 3X. Never again! Best of luck to you and if you have any questions, please feel free to message me.

It has been about 3.5 months since I had my surgery. It has not been easy been an easy path at all but I still don't regret it, just kinda wish I had done it sooner. I have been sick a lot, turns out that developing ulcers after surgery did not aid in recovery and I did suffer. Thankfully another scope, some medication and the ability to get a bit more food in me (and keep it in me) means that I finally have hope and believe it will lead to a full recovery. Even with the challenges I have had no real complications, I am losing weight, my knees are starting to feel better and I know in the long run this is the best thing I could have done for myself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
