Why do we have to drink Decaf tea and coffee before and after surgery?

Caffeine causes dehydration and can make you hungry.

In addition to the dehydration, caffeine is also a stimulant and will cause you to be or feel hungry. BUT, the biggest reason for Decaf only is that regular coffee is very acid and can cause stomach ulcers. (I am not a Dr. but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express)

Caffeine and other elements in coffee are a bit abrasive and iritate new surgical "joints" or linings of the stomach

I could drink regular coffee once I hit the six-month mark. Some surgeons allow you to do it sooner (and some allow it right away). I think those who want you to wait do it because of the aforementioned reasons - it's dehydrating, it can be hard on a healing stomach, etc.

????.....LMAO!!!! WhoooHoooo!! I needed that good laugh @reztlpa, thanks ever so much! I've heard all the speeches from the dr's about the pros and cons of coffee. I come from a family that refers to decaf as "Why Bother??" so I understand everyone's complaint of no, decaf, or limited use of caffeine.

I plan on asking my surgeon how soon in can have coffee-even if it's decaf. ????. I just had to respond to that post-it really tickled my funny bone!

Today is my first day without caffeine. I've been weaning off of it slowly - I went from less regular to half-caf to less half-caf to Decaf. No headache so far today which I think is a good sign but could mean I'm in for a whopper headache tonight/tomorrow.

I don't think I will go back to having caffeine after surgery. It will feel great to break free of another habit/addiction!

I brew a pot of Decaf coffee every Sunday to last me all week. Once it cools, I transfer it to a big bottle and place in the fridge. Every morning I pour my vanilla Premier Protein drink and some coffee over ice along with sugar free coffee Syrup. It's like heaven in a glass! I LOVE iced coffees and this is both inexpensive and healthy :) I'm not a Breakfast person so this has been a huge help for me.

I was a big time coffee drinker but went to Decaf for the three months that the doctor ordered. So of course on the day I could have "real" coffee I brewed and couldn't wait. I drank my wonderful coffee I soon felt anxious and my heart got all out of whack. So back to decaf. Oh well

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
