I am 1 week short of 6 months post vsg. I have lost 76lbs, including preop. I felt like I was losing so slowly in the beginning, but now I am pleases with the weight loss so far. I have about another 45-50 lbs to go. Anyway there were times after the surgery I was able to eat quite a bit. I once at about 4 ounces of steak and 2-3 ounces of chicken at one sitting at a korean barbecue restaurant, and just felt full, not stuffed. Anyway 12/22/15 I had a total knee replacement, and it has been, as someone on here put it, brutal. I never imagined it was going to be this painful. this is my 3rd major surgery, and I recovered rather quickly and painlessly, but not this time. I am still taking norco 5 weeks out. I have felt in the past 5 weeks so much more restriction. I somedays can only eat 500-700 calories and do not get in my Protein or fluids, but I just can't. Before the knee surgery I was able to eat 1000-1100 calories and always got in 80-100 gms of Protein, fluids have always been a little bit of a problem. I was just wondering, and I have emailed the NUT and the nurse practiontioner, and have not heard back yet, on any ideas why this restriction is so much more now. Is it the narcotics possibly. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. It is funny, I would read on here how so many of you could only take a few bites, and I wondered why I could seem to eat so much more, and now i am feeling like this is how it originally should have been right after surgery, so I have gone backwards, lol. Thanks for any thoughts

I am absolutely not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you might be right about the drugs they have you one for pain interfering with the amount you feel like eating. narcotics/opioids are going to suppress your appetite and lower the hunger signals, and I'd not be surprised if you got full faster on less food as well since it's likely screwing up your full feelings too.

So sorry you're in more pain and having a longer recovery. My mom had total knee replacement many years ago, and I remember it taking quite some time for her to be up and around and doing okay.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
