HealthyRN 56 Posted January 28, 2016 So I know my doc told me to wait 30 minutes before and after eating to start drinking again, but should I be waiting longer after I eat? I still feel full in the bottom part of my stomach but am also thirsty. Sleeved on 10-13-
VDLT 244 Posted January 28, 2016 I was sleeved just a few weeks before you. My surgeon said one hour after I eat. I had a band for 14 years before converting to sleeve so this was old news to me and a well established habit so it isn't hard. I do get thirsty too but wait. I can eat more than most folks say they can so I try to steer clear of drinking after meals to remain full longer.
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted January 28, 2016 I am allowed to drink right up to the time I start eating, but supposed to wait at least 20 minutes after. I found that realistically, if I am eating to the point of "fullness", I have to wait more like 40 minutes to an hour after eating, because it takes that long for me to have room for Water. You certainly shouldn't try to drink at 30 minutes if you are still feeling too full.
jane13 2,256 Posted January 28, 2016 @@HealthyRN - I was told that the drinking AFTER eating was critical than the BEFORE eating. Think about it. The liquid pretty quickly (more than very well chewed food) will pass through your stomach. Its the AFTER that keeps you full longer. I will sip once or twice while eating because some foods tend to be drier to me. I am re-visiting the after I eat 30 min wait - I have fallen off the wagon and the scale is showing it. VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted January 28, 2016 My team said stop drinking 15 minutes before a meal and don't drink again until at least 30 minutes after. Honestly, at this point, it's no big deal to wait. It's like everything else about this journey -- you just build the habit over time, and it starts to become a lifestyle.
