Starting my Sleeve Journey after my failed Lapband

Recommended Posts

I was banded in 2011. After a couple port replacements, the band came out the end of 2013 due to infection. I was successful at losing weight with the band (about a 90lb loss). However, that weight (and then some) came on with a vengeance over the past 2 years.

I am nearing the end of my pre-op requirements for the Sleeve. All I have left is a pre-op class February 8, and then we submit to insurance. I am hoping to have a February or March surgery date ????. I have the usual apprehensions about the actual surgery, however, I am more concerned that surgery won't be possible because of scar tissue I have accumulated over the past abdominal surgeries. My surgeon said that he will only know once I'm on the table and he goes inside. I'm freaked out that I will wake up without having the VSG performed. I trust my surgeon and know he is extremely competent and familiar with revisions. So I'm hoping for the best.

I regret not documenting my lapband journey, so I have decided to document my sleeve journey on YouTube. It's mostly for myself, but I love learning from other people in the community going through the same things. If you want to check it out, search: Jenn's band to sleeve journey on YouTube. If you have a channel, I'd love to follow you as well...subscribe and we can follow each other.

Can I ask how long your band was in? I'm hoping that because my band was in for a relatively short time (2.5yrs), that there will be less scarring.

But I think the surgeon was also concerned about the 2 minor surgeries I had to take the port out and then replace it. I'm staying hopeful.

I only met with the surgeon once so far and he mentioned this "issue" towards the end of the consultation. I was so taken aback that I couldn't think of any questions on the spot. I'm definitely going to talk to him about it at our pre-op mtg.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
