My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet .......

....if your BMI is under 50. Mine is 46, and therefore no pre-op diet, other than Clear liquids the day before surgery.

Is this becoming a new normal?

Certainly not the norm, but not unheard of either. Every surgeon has their own plan and requirements. That's why it is so important to stick to your specific plan and not let the experiences of others pull you off track.

no pre-op diet, Clear Liquids the day before surgery.s new normal?

@@GAHUNTER

my surgeon didn't require a pre-op

i was surprised

i think the majority of WLS people are required to have had pre-op liquids

but if your doc says pre-op under your BMI is not necessary go with it

the final word for any question/answer should go to your doc/NUT

always listen to them (or me ;) )

good luck

kathy

I had no per op diet either, i asked my Dr. about it because I was concerned food might get stuck in the staples, he said as long as you dont eat after 12 pm the food will be gone from the stomach.

I didn't have a specific pre op diet. I was already on a high Protein diet and was told to just continue that. No solids after noon the day before surgery and nothing after midnight

my surgeon told me that he believes the pre op liquid diet will be phased out of most practices in the next year, because they've proven that they aren't that effective and it's really abusive to the patients. I didn't have a liquid diet at all or any restrictions whatsoever. He said the o my time where a liquid diet would be effective would be to drop the weight of someone who was like 600lbs to make the surgery safer mortality wise, but he sees it going away in the next few years. He's also an inspector and qualifies places for their center of excellence status, so I assume he knows what he's talking about as far as that. I know I was grateful because I had been sweating the idea of the liquid diet for a long time and when he said there wasn't going to be one I was absolutely estatic!

Yep, same here. No pre-op diet, just clears the day before and nothing after midnight the day of.

I just started my pre-op diet yesterday - overall ok - just a minor headache. I wish it wasn't requirement for me!

What's weird is I actually wish it was lol. I've lost 10 since I put myself on a pre-op (mostly liquid) diet but if it had been a requirement I would've been more strict with myself and I probably would've lost more.

My doctor/surgeon required a high protein/low sugar/fat for two weeks prior. Then just Clear Liquids two days prior to surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
