Two week pre op diet

So I started my 2 week pre op diet on Monday . It was one of the most miserable days. All I could think about was food, I was starving, and had an extremely difficult time. I will be honest here, I cheated. So, I started fresh yesterday. Drank my shake, and followed the diet, had a difficult time around dinner time. Here I am now, starting day 3, and I will do good today. It is very difficult to follow through but I realized this is exactly how I will eat after my surgery. Anyone else have difficulty at first?

It sucks during pre-op diet.....but this is simply a TEMPORARY situation.

Gut check time. Don't cheat yourself. Stay strict. There is a safety reason for this diet. YOUR safety. Don't cheat yourself.

Yes....you will be on the liquids for a short period after the surgery as your new stomach heals. You will then transition to other foods and soon be able to eat whatever you wish.

It's up to you to chose wisely and select foods that will support your weight loss goals.

I skipped the pureed stage because I felt it was a pitfall. There simply wasn't anything I wanted to eat in that state.....I stuck with the shakes an additional time period and then transitioned to soft fish, grilled chicken and etc.

Enjoy the weight loss you'll see if stick with the pre-op correctly.

Space out your allowed shakes so there aren't periods of hunger. Stay highly hydrated. Stay active. Stay outa the kitchen......let others fend for themselves. Stay focused on the countdown and being strict. If you absolutely have to cheat then do so with an additional shake only....don't open the door to temptation with other junk.

It gets much, much easier after the surgery. I assure you.

Pre-op diet sucks for sure. But you have to put on your big girl/boy panties and suck it up. It's only temporary and making a commitment to yourself now only makes it more likely you will be able to stay on track post-op.

I am just learning about this... Do you guys buy a specific brand of shakes? I've seen recipes for propel pop sickles and other things.

Your nutritionist should give you some guidelines for shakes. In general you want to make sure they are low carb and low sugar. For ready-to-drink shakes, I liked EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control (rich dark chocolate flavor), which are available at Target, Walmart, and some grocery stores. For Protein powder, I would buy Now Sports unflavored whey isolate and flavor it with Torani sugar-free syrups.< /p>

It seems there are many to choose from. I am glad to see all the options. I'll start trying different ones now so it'll be less stressful than rushing to decide on one because my liquid diet is starting. Everything I can do ahead of time I'm going to do. Biggest thing currently is getting off diet coke. I have never been a Water drinker so this will be a challenge for me. Even on days I drink less soda I just don't drink anything. I can do this though. ????

If Water is hard, ask your nutritionist if you are allowed to add things to it. I'm on my 2 week trial liquid diet (just a trial, not pre-op yet) and I am allowed to add liquid crystal light to my Water, or to have Diet Ocean Spray to drink if I need a change. It's not easy though, and like you I am dealing with a lot of hunger, especially in the evenings. I try to spread my calories out evenly through the day, and drink lots of water. One evening I couldn't stand the pangs, but I had another Boost shake instead of food. I figure in the long run it's better to have another shake than to cheat and have actual food. It would set me back. Do you have someone you can turn to when you feel like it's too much?

To second what someone else said, your dietician should give you guidelines. For me, being an almost OCD rule follower (until I'm not) it helped me greatly. This is what was in my binder regarding post op nutrition. I received it well in advance of surgery and was able to purchase my "food" early so that I could sample and make a smart plan. Hope it helps:

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...
