shriner37 249 Posted January 27, 2016 I'm seeing the same thing. I have read that it is pretty normal, and that after a couple of months the Hair loss stops and the hair starts coming back.
Nibbler 71 Posted January 27, 2016 I'm not quite 4 months post op and am having the same problem. I think its all about the lack of Protein.
jane13 2,256 Posted January 27, 2016 I am about 9 months out and it really kicked into gear when I was losing pretty fast (around 3 months to about 8 months). It has since slowed. So has the weight loss.
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted January 27, 2016 There is nothing you can do NOW to prevent the Hair loss you are experiencing now. It is the result of things that happened to you months ago. All you can do now is make sure you are getting your Protein and Vitamins to help the hair grow back strong. My hair loss lasted about 1.5 months. Some people's lasts longer. You are right there in the window when it is usually at its heaviest. You just have to ride it out. It WILL grow back.
gigglesforyou369 5 Posted January 27, 2016 Thank you, this makes me feel better.
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted January 27, 2016 Thank you, this makes me feel better. I cut my hair short to help make it less obvious and I don't think anyone noticed the loss besides me and my husband. My husband only noticed because the bathroom was covered in hair!
Proud2BMe 1,016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Really wish people would actually take the time to read the forum before posting as this is a topic that is posted over and over and over again with each person believing they are the first person to ask about it. There's nothing you can do to stop it. It's not caused by lack of Protein or Vitamins. It's caused by the stress of losing weight. Losing weight actually puts stress on the body. When your weight stabilizes your hair will start to grow back. Don't waste any money on products or Vitamins that people may tell you will help you as they won't. What you can do is cut your hair short so you won't notice the Hair loss and be freaked out in the shower with hair in your hands after you Shampoo your hair. That would mean that nobody should ever ask any question ever, anywhere. Because I'm sure all the questions you've ever asked have been answered somewhere on google. Right?!?! JamieLogical 8,710 Posted January 27, 2016 Despite what @@Proud2BMe says. Lack of Protein and proper nutrition definitely CAN cause hair loss. Post-WLS Hair loss is caused by a combination of factors. It's a triple whammy, so to speak, because anesthesia, rapid weight loss, and protein/vitamin deficiencies can all cause hair loss. The good news, it does grow back. Getting your Protein and Vitamins can certainly help with regrowth.

However, with weight loss surgery patients it's the weight loss itself that causes it and not lack of protein or Vitamins. This is well documented. If you are not malnourished and are getting in your protein then buying extra stuff and taking extra supplements or using various shampoos, etc., will do NOTHING to help regrow hair. christopherM 13 Posted January 27, 2016 Everyone asks the same questions. If you're an expert on the topic, most questions will seem rote and pointless. Ultimately, it's still going to help to see things re-surfaced from time to time. I, myself, wouldn't even have thought of looking for threads about hair loss because I haven't talked much about it with my surgeon. It's good to know that nothing really fixes it and it does come back.
