Advice on food while traveling

Recommended Posts

Any sleeve vets have any advice on eating out? It's something that will eventually come up and I was wondering what other people do to keep in line with the plan. I have an out of town soccer tournament and eating out is going to be the norm for the weekend I will be 5 months post op then and eating out is something I avoid right now. I exercise a ton and just want some feedback and ideas. Thanks

I generally find something good in the appetizer section: grilled shrimp, meatballs, chicken wings, etc. For Entrees, I have them hold whatever carby side is usually attached to the entree (potatoes, rice etc.). Stay away from sauces and cheese. Do not order a drink and push away any Water glass so it is out of easy reach. For Breakfast, my standard order is one egg over medium. Even if it is not on the menu, that is something a cook can handle. I have yet to be in a restaurant that didn't have something healthy I could eat. Good luck to you! :)

First I would recommend taking stuff with you for the in between times (1 of package of Leave beef Jerky, 1/2 of of cashews, Protein bars, Premier Protein drinks if you can refrigerate them, premeasured Protein. powder, etc). I am amazed you haven't eaten out in 5 months! That is great! I got for anything with grilled chicken (salad but just mostly eat the meat, fajitas tell them low oil or as little oil as possible). I have also had a lot of success with tortilla Soup (leave out any tortilla strips) or bean Soup. Also some places have wonderful roasted chicken which is very moist. Grilled shrimp is a good option too. I don't avoid cheeses but I do try to eat small amounts of it. Avoid any sauces, creams, gravies, dressings, etc unless you at have them on the side and can dip your fork in it and then your bite of meat. (Helps with moisture and only uses a tiny amount.). Oh and if you can get them to go to ChicFilA, you can get the grilled nuggets and some fruit. Their buffalo sauce is the lowest calorie.

Hope that helps! I do lots of soccer tournaments with my nephews and have had great success still doing this. And hey, don't be afraid to say no thanks you aren't hungry and just eat your Protein Bar. You will do great!

There will be SOMETHING you can eat anywhere you go. Chili is a good option. eggs & sausage from anywhere that has all day Breakfast. The meat from appetizers and Entrees. Worst case you can order some sort of sandwich and just not eat the bread. Just steer clear of breading, Pasta, rice, and sweet sauces and you'll be fine.

I will usually share an entree with someone or look over the appetizers to see if there is something of interest there. food options that I like are fajitas (you can go without the tortilla), tacos (I just scoop out the insides and eat it), if I order a hamburger I eat it without the bun using a fork and knife. Chili is another option. I will also go with a salad with Protein such as chicken. As for sides I consider the least carbs or offer it to someone else at the table.

Good luck with your choices and think about what you will eat. Feel free to pick at your food in order to get at the real item that you want.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
