2 days postop... How did you feel?

Recommended Posts

I too was sleeved on Thursday. The belly button is definitely sore. The pain on my right side was probably air (we saw it in the swallow test ). Coughing is awful. Hell, a hiccup hurt. Things that work for me: a small stool next to the bed so easier in and out. I'm still hunched over while walking. I feel your pain though.

How are you doing? My pain is much better I only took one dose of pain meds today. I can now get out of bed or off the couch with little to no pain. But coughing still stinks! Hope your doing better as well

Pain is much better. I coughed today without pain. I only took 2 Percocet all of yesterday and so far none today. I keep reminding myself that it's only been 5 days since surgery.

Hey guys use a pillow to hold over your abdomen when you cough. It is crucial that you do cough turn and deep breathe to prevent pmeumonia! It gets better I promise! Walking as much as you can will relieve the gas pains too! Good luck guys! I'm three weeks out and 2nd day back at work. Extremely tired!

Today is postop Day 2 for me. I came home about 4 PM yesterday. Honestly I was more comfortable in the hospital. I started getting the foamies yesterday afternoon. Two areas of pain - my big incision, and my esophagus. Esophageal pain is the worst, I had a hiatal hernia repair. My liquid pain meds are vile, and they hurt going down.

Not passing any gas yet, just lots of burping. I know this is temporaty, and that today and tomorrow will probably be my most uncomfortable. I'm sipping on my Water though it makes the pain worse. I had my AM omeprazole, now for the Zofran. I'll try pain meds after that.

I'm on day 3, and I have been experiencing issues of regrets like "why can't I drink the required amount of fluid". I'm very grateful for the comments of stay the course because it gets better.

Day 2 was the worst for me, all the gas and cramping that was there to be had showed up that morning after surgery. Day 3 was much better, I was able to skip pain meds except at bedtime. I'm on day 4 now and another step better than the previous day, things have been far simpler since I figured out that warm liquids go down easier than cold ones :D
I finally took my gas-pacing outside and did a mile today, at the current pace tomorrow is looking good.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
