I start my ten day pre-op diet tomorrow. I will have my surgery on August 8th. I am excited and very ready for this to happen. I got rejected by my insurance over a year and half ago to have gastric bypass done. I felt like I was worth nothing and would always be fat. But I saved my money and now did more investigation and decided that the Lap-Band would be a better choice for me. I just hope that I can do the liquid diet. I feel very determined right now but in a few days I don't know. It helps reading all the supportive comments that past lap-banders have posted. It has encouraged me too. Good luck to all and keep the positive comments coming.

Nancy

:clap2:I know exactly how your feeling. My gallbladder surgery is the 14th and my Lap-band surgery is the 21st. It's like I can't wait for the day to come, but on the other hand I'm not looking forward to the pre-op diet and the liquid diet. Did you join in on the Crazy Ates August thread yet? :whoo:

I'm feeling really nervous too. I've been looking into the lap band 8 months now, and here my surgery is scheduled for Aug. 6. Once I decided to actually do it, it all happened so fast. I haven't had time to absorb that I'm not just THINKING about it any more - I'm DOING it. Hard to wrap my head around it, you know?

If it wasn't for a totally supportive husband, I don't know if I'd be doing it. My mom doesn't want me to do it, one of my closest friends looked at me disapprovingly and said, "Well, I'm doing Weight Watchers and going to the gym!" I wanted to smack her... sheesh... Why the heck didn't I think of that!!! Maybe I should try that first... Oh wait - I HAVE tried that, and EVERY OTHER diet and exercise plan in the world as well.

I am sooo looking forward to having my stomach in MY corner for a change - working FOR me and not against me.

Nannyof3, I'm a MiMi of 2, same age as you and I too got rejected by my insurance for gastric bypass. I felt like giving up hope...that I'd just be fat for life, but I knew if I ever gave up...I'd have no life. I was killing myself. I saved as you did for the band and I'm so glad I didn't have the gastric years ago. The band is the best thing I've ever done or will do for myself. I was banded 6/19/07. It's been 5 1/2 wks. and I've lost a total of 34 lbs. so far. Some of that was due to the 2 wks pre-op liquid diet and I won't lie....for me it was hard, but I was determined I could do it and I did. I even had to go on Vacation to New Orleans (home to some of the best food in the world I might add!!!!) with my daughter and grandaughter. I wasn't sure I could pull that off, but the scare my Dr. gave me about needing my liver to be the best it could possibly be never left my mind! LOL I knew that my reason for doing this was to save my life and I sure wasn't going to blow it before I made it to surgery! Just keep the big picture in your mind and the family you want to be there for and give it everything you've got. Our reward will come and we'll be so proud.. I already feel so much better and just these few weeks later, I'm doing projects in my house that I've put off for years! You hang in there. You can do it...the best is yet to come!! Good luck and God Bless!

Gosh...We've all heard the same things! How great that you have such a supportive husband. Some people will never understand and that's OK. I love your attitude! You'll do great!!

Hi Nanny, I am on 8/8 too. Also getting nervous and trying to buy some of the things I think I will need. I don't have any special diet except for Clear Liquids for two days before surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
