Exercise after Banding

Recommended Posts

Hi folks:

I am wondering about exercise. I heard at one of my appointments that working out at the gym can begin 4 weeks after surgery.

Yet, I've seen here that some people begin working out 1-2 weeks after surgery. What is the deal with this exactly. isn't it dangerous to workout right after banding?

my plan is to wait two weeks, besides 5 minute walks here and there. doc said it is personal. my biggest problem aside from pain is the week feeling i have from liquid diet. doc says within a week of mushy diet i will feel better and exercise is on my agenda. matter of fact my sons doc said begin walking several times a day for 10 minutes beginning day of surgery. helps with sweeling and pain. appears to be working for him.

That's interesting. My doctor said 4 weeks but I beleive that is specific to gym equipment though. Walking on a treadmill i think should be ok. We shall see! thanks

Yep. My doc said that for the first month, I could only walk. No lifting or strenuous exercise. After a month, I should be okay to move on to other forms of exercise. I'm sure we'll know for sure once I go in for my follow-up closer to a month out.

(I do have my one-week follow-up this coming Thursday, 8/2.)

According to my instructions - I can begin exercising after one week. I have to wait 3 weeks for strength training. But I'm sure I will just start out slow.

How do you feel after your surgery? I'm so scared, reading all of this stuff about pain in the port area. especially since I tend to have nightmares if i sleep on my back. oh god.

I'm doing really well. Of course, my stomach is sore, but I've been putting my ice pack on it and that really helps. I've been very active and moving around a lot, so I think that has helped prevent the gas problems. I got to take a shower today, so I was soooo excited about that!!!

I am a side sleeper, so I was scared I wouldn't be able to sleep well...but I can kinda sleep on my side w/o pain, so that works.

My doctor requires daily 30 minute walks starting the DAY AFTER surgery. He doesn't care if you have to break them up into smaller walks as long as you get your 30 minutes in. He didn't allow me to start lifting weights until 5 weeks post-op. I think all docs have a little different protocol, but I think the most important thing to do is to develop an exercise program that eases you into fitness (especially if your new to it) and listen to your body....in other words, don't over do it. You want to start a life-long habit of fitness and I think a lot of times we go into these programs "gung-ho" and then quickly burn out. At least that is my opinion for what it's worth...

Thanks, it sounds like a good plan. it doesn't sound like a good idea to jump into resistence training right away. I would be afraid to do that.

I asked my surgeon about getting on the bow flex and he started shaking his head almost immediately. He said to wait a couple of months for anything heavy duty. He, like others have said, encouraged me to walk as my primary exercise. He said start out slow and build to at least 30 minutes a day.

I also feel like so many of you that even walking right now is a chore with my energy level so low with this liquids only phase. As I get ready for my mushy food phase, I am hoping the energy boosts.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
